No, that's what a service like Rdio is for - you don't even need to pay for Rdio at the lowest subscription level.

Rdio hasn't been along long enough though. Pandora and Spotify aren't available in Canada.

And it still costs $4.99/month for Rdio at the lowest level, IIRC.

Not saying it is not a great deal. It absolutely is, but these services have only come around the past couple years, while torrents have been around much longer.

I used to use Pandora constantly to listen to music. After it starting restricting Canadian IPs, I starting using torrents to get music I couldn't otherwise buy at all in Canada.

I thought Rdio had a free, metered level, but taking a second look, it seems to be US only..which is ironic I suppose.

I use Grooveshark, signed up when the service was still $3/month. I'm a fan.

Unfortunately, it still requires Adobe Flash on the back-end. So either Android, BlackBerry, or jailbroken iPhone is required.

Grooveshark is going to be shutdown next. They are the king of illegal music sharing. Although users can only listen to it and not actually download it.

Umm, no. The web app uses html5 and not flash, and works on pretty much everything, including a non jailbroken iPhone.

Now THAT I did not know about.

Unfortunately, it says 'Beta' and I'm afraid it isn't lying. Really limited functionality (can't log in, use playlists, etc). Can't get songs to play on the latest and greatest release of Firefox, and searches don't even complete on IE9 / Windows Phone 7. (I checked and apparently it's due to a bug in the IE9 browser... Grooveshark could just make everything go through HTTPS - which they'll need to when they introduce the ability to log in - but they've opted not to.)

For the time being, looks like I'm going to have to use the app... which is fine, but I really hoped I'd be able to rely almost NIL on my iDevice.
