Many Albertans (and Canadians) no longer hold any endearment or loyalty to the Crown.
|
And many do like to continue our affiliation with the Commenwealth and its head of state. [/b][/quote]
Many people like the Flames and the Oilers too, and many don't like Hockey in Alberta. (yes, I do think the monarchy is trivial enough to compare it to Pro Sports)
so why not name Highway 2, "Calgary Flames Highway" going south, and "Edmonton Oilers Highway" going north?
Point is, she's someone paid to be here, and if she wasn't paid, wouldn't come. So, why award her with this crap. Better for us to reward our hockey teams... at least they actually mean something to this province.

Are you sure that we are paying her money to be here? Because that is the first that I have heard that is the case?

well, as far as I understand, her trip is being paid for by the Alberta, Sask and Fed Governments...
so, in that way, we are paying for her to be there.
If everything she did, the British Gov't covered... that would be different.

Even if we aren't paying her to be here I'm sure there is a big cost to the tax payers to fund all of the pomp (sp?) and circumstance that comes with it. This is what I object to. There are way more important things that I'd rather see our dollars going to then having her come over here to prance around. I could give a rat's rear end what the road is called on the way to Edmonton but the dollars spent on this trip is a total waste in my view.
End of rant.

What we're paying in this trip is nothing compared to the money burned by our Governer General, if you want to take issue to the monarchy I suggest the first place to start is with Adrienne Clarkson and then we can go after the Queen even though her trip here has generated some tourist dollars
Just a thought

Yeah excellent point. The amount of money that Clarkson spends is totally disgusting and needs to be taken care of. Compared to that this is mere pennies

Why stop at just Clarkson? We are actually paying ELEVEN people to do the same job: represent the Queen in Canada. What actual, useful purpose does the Governor General and Lieutenant Governors actually serve? The only thing they do of note is read the Speech from the Throne to the Commons or Legislature, and that can easily be done by the Speaker of the House.
We can do without the collossal waste of money.

^ Agreed!
It is all a waste of money. Those who support the monarchy should join some 'Go Monarchy Go Club' and pay for it themselves and let the rest of us be.
Public health care (and so on...) is being cut or being questioned due to expense across much of the country yet we waste money on wealthy, aristocratic (in the worst sense of the word), snobby, wellfare cases?
I am not conservative by any measure (nor am i overly liberal), but waste is waste and THIS is waste....

Yep, we paid for the trip. It seems really stupid to me that we'd do that considering she's the richest woman on Earth. I'd extend an invitation, but why waste taxpayers money on it?
