The Catholic Church isn't the only institution with this terrible problem and slowly, very slowly, it is coming to grips with it because in large part of the opinions of its members that abuse is completely unacceptable.

Unfortunately, the anti-catholics will jump on this one (as they have in this thread) and will blame Catholicism for this tragedy as well.

Sorry KC but you are right about the "slowly, very slowly, aspect of the RCC.
For all of their preaching about doing good for society you would think they would move "quickly" to rectify their "problem".

The funny thing is that the subject of this thread isn't even a Catholic institution, yet more than half the posts are about Catholics.

I do some pro bono work for Catholic Social Services on their immigration outreach. It is non-denominational and 91 cents of each dollar donated reach the programs here in Alberta.

For all the crap Catholic's get, I think it's high time the critics step up and acknowledge the good as well. Otherwise they are hyppocrites.

No one is suggesting that religious organizations don't do some good...I am quite sure they spend millions helping people. Not sure what that has to do with the topic at hand? Are you suggesting without Catholics doing this it would never get done? Or should we forgive them for all of their transgressions because they help immigrants?

I'm saying that I'm starting to grow intolerant of those whose pastime is crapping on the Catholic Church.

And it's billions by the way.

I'd probably be a hell of alot more sympathetic to the church if it showed some tolerance itself, but I have a hard time feeling sympathy for an organization that shows an utter lack of concern or care for so many it considers sinners, including, up until a couple of years ago, all of those Christ killing jews, homosexuals and the like, and yet employed without concern 5,000 pedophiles in its priesthood in N America alone.

Maybe if the Church showed a little humility and admitted it really isn't a credible moral force right now, stopped trying to tell others how to live their lives and got its own house in order it could find its way back to what a church should be.

I acknowledge all kinds of religions and groups do tons of great work, are filled with amazing people with big hearts who contribute more to this world than most could ever dream of. Humanist groups all over the world are taking their lead from these awesome groups to learn ourselves how to be as successful as they have been in helping the needy, poor, immigrants, etc..

Does not stop my neverending condemnation of the Catholic church (and many others) for their handling of child abuse, their horrible policies in 3rd world countries, and thats just a few of the problems I have with them.

Stephen Fry puts it best though, its not the people, its the rigid policies and beliefs of the church that I am staunchly against.

I am sure as an insider for the RCC you must have some knowledge on how much they donate to various charities...unfortunately they never specify or publish the numbers that are associated with their incoming and outgoing dollars. Id love to see some actual figures.
Is each church a "Corporation sole"? If so who are the officers of each of those corporations? Are there any obligations by these officers to report publicly and if not why?
