Hopefully never...

I reckon the only thing that's changed in the last decade is I have more money. I also have a house but that's probably because I couldn't find a landlord that would let me build dirt jumps in the back yard!

Life's to short to get old, become compliant, worry, stress, sit down and relax, go to bed early, watch tv, etc... Ok, tv has nothing to do with it - just kind of fit the list.

Actually if anything makes me feel "grown up" it's watching the people around me get old!

Children get told what to do - not adults. As an "adult" I feel I am old enough to determine what it means to be an "adult". Don't let societal norms determine what it means to "act your age".

I enjoyed games, tv, comics, etc. as a kid but I don't devote any time to them anymore. I haven't sat down and watched an actual show on TV for probably 2 years now. I don't have the attention span for entertainment anymore. It bores me too much. It feels like ADD but backwards or something.

Does anyone else have that? I just have zero attention span for entertainment now, it feels like my brain is wasting away when I do those things. I can't even watch a full hockey game. I usually tune in halfway through the 3rd in the background while I am doing work or just watch the highlights afterward. As evidenced by my posts here, I still like to talk about hockey or videogames, etc. as I feel it uses my brain more and it's more social.

Ah I see now, I didn't know of the thread. I thought it was for discussing new video games and you were just going there to discuss games that you've never played. I get it now.

I used to play them a lot but I've always viewed it as an extremely dorky activity and always will. I really only play an NHL game every now and then.

Actually, I do discuss games I've never played. That's another time saving method. Playing vicariously through others.

lol. Nah, I'm just kind of bleh about everything. But there are theories out there like the hedonic treadmill or hedonic set points that suggest that events like raises or promotions or what have you have a temporary effect on happiness before you return to your usual equilibrium. That's all I really meant by it.

It's not a waste of time if you don't think it is.

I'll only feel like a grown up after my first divorce, an illegitimate child, and at least one bankruptcy. Until then I'm still a kid.

I'm 36, married, three kids, supervisory position at work. I don't feel grown up. I don't really know what that means. But I physically feel too old for some shinguard.

Not to sound like a liberal ######, but this post comes off like it was written in the 1950's. Society has seen massive change in the last 15 years, and this idea that you need to follow the path of "career development" to be successful is a relic of a time where your role as a man was to enter the workforce with a 9 to 5 office job as soon as possible and raise a family.

Going off on a bit of a tangent here, but why exactly is it wrong to enjoy video games and cartoons well into your adult years? Life is short, so why should we spend the better part of it worrying about work and money and what society tells us our priorities should be? It's almost as if people derive some sense of pride from being able to say they're too busy for the things they love.

No, nothing like that. Two cops and someone from the coroner's office came to my door that morning to break the news of a death in our family. A very surreal experience, but at the same time I can remember it vividly.

I think a lot of you guys are confusing young at heart, with not growing up. I still love video games, blow countless amounts of cash on cars/motorcycles/man toys/bicycles, still play hockey, golf whenever I want still love to be a complete juvenile jackass with my closest buddies, and have been with a lot of women... but that doesn't mean I haven't grown up in the areas that matter.

At the end of the day, no matter what, my job and paying the bills on time comes first, but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy the fruits of my labour for now. I work like a dog, and I deserve to play hard. Yes I am child free at this point, but that doesn't mean I won't be forever, and when that day comes, I am sure my priorities will shift, but for the time being, I am doing, and buying all the things I never could have afforded when I was younger. I am enjoying every minute I can, while I can. Life is short, and I intend on living it to the fullest. I have seen first hand, how quick it can change, if you read my post on page one of this thread.

Holding out as long as I have as a bachelor has had its downsides, but on the flip side, I can honestly say, when I do settle down, I have zero regrets, and I will never say, "I wish I did this." or "I wish I'd bought that car....etc." I have purged my system of all the frivolous crap in life, and will be much more at ease that I sewed all my oats (whatever the hell that means) when the day comes I settle down.

Plus as close as I was to my niece and nephew, in a strange way, always made me feel like I kinda did raise a couple kids to a certain extent. Albeit I was the big, dumb, let you get away with whatever you want uncle... I still got show those kids how to laugh and have fun. Which I feel is one of the most important lessons in life.

I was about 30 when I had a profound spiritual experience. You can say 'so what' but for me I finally felt somewhat in charge of my life. I made up my own mind about what I wanted, and what I didn't want I eliminated and felt better for it. I guess I truly started to think for myself instead of being influenced by my friends, by my parents and family and by all the garbage I'd picked up in those 30 years. It wasn't a complete change at 30 as I continued to change and grow but it was at that time I was shown the tools to enjoy my life as before that I didn't see much point in it.

Later I got married, raised a family, bought a house etc. so that others probably thought I was grown up but the thing is what others think isn't what's important, it's what I feel and think. Now my children are adults and I don't have many responsibilities, so I guess in some eyes I'm not grown up anymore.

One thing I've always done is try to stay current with the attitudes of the current generation but I've now given up. I can't relate to hip hop or rap music at all and I now feel I've entered the same mind space of the old people when I was young. I like coming to this site, besides the hockey it helps keep me current and I'm often right clicking a new word or phrase and searching google so I know what the hell someone is talking about.
