I think CBC turning it into a story about whether Ford's language was inappropriate is damn wrong.

Not only that, but the Toronto Police Chief last night came out and denied that Ford said anything inappropiate at all. Yet this is still a story as far as the CBC is concerned

Has the CBC produced any good comedy over the last 20 years? Kids In The Hall was wicked, but that finished up around 1994. Since then, they have had some real duds. Did anyone actually find This Hour has 22 Minutes or The Royal Canadian Air Farce funny? I Certainly didn't.
In fact, if it were not for HNIC, I would never watch the CBC.

If you want Fox and CNN, have at it.

Most Canadians don't bother with that s**t. Look at the ratings for SUN TV.

We have ctv and global, both of which are far better. And guess what? We don't have to pay over a billion dollars every year to keep them in business.

I'm glad to see that the overwhelming majority of people here support shutting it down. Hopefully the conservative government starts listening soon.

Thanks for finally pointing that out. I'm not sure why people keep harping on Foxnews and CNN when we clearly have other good alternatives here

I don't care much for CBC TV, but CBC radio is outstanding (1,2 and 3).

I quit watching anything other than hockey when the Kids in the Hall ended. (besides a bit of news)
Give the CBC a budget of 100 million. That is 100 million more than other than the other networks are getting free from the government. They can run a national radio station and have one network which runs news in the morning, shows through the day and a national news program at night. If they can't compete, then their product isn't good enough.
We have enough choices in 2011. The average citizen can easily find Canadian material if they want. I also don't believe that the artists should be propped up by the taxpayer. If you have true talent, you will make it in the industry.

Start by demanding to open the books. There is no way a government funded broadcaster should be able to say we have no business knowing what they spend money on.

Because Daradon's only two arguments to justify wasting this much money on CBC rely on an ad hominem and a strawman.
He can only justify his stance by pretending that all privately run news sources are like Fox news, or claiming that the only reason people here hate CBC is that they are conservative hicks.
I'm actually embarrassed for Daradon on this one.

They stay competitive because of the CBC.
We don't live in a vacuum.
To be clear I am against most government run/state sponsored companies. Stop giving money to Air Canada, please! Proper to sell Petro Canada.
However the news is a lens we need. It's as important as schools and hospitals. It's a franchise that will not be better served with corporate dollars. And if you want to see what happens next, you only need to look to our neighbours to the South.

Again, the news isn't what we have a problem with. At least I don't. I have a problem with the millions being lost in promoting and showing 'other' programming that apparently nobody is watching.
And please stop comparing us for the US. We already have corporate run news stations that are a LOT better than anything the US has to offer.

As I said before, I agree that the programming is terrible for the most part. But unfortunately it's a package. It's like that one girlfriend that wouldn't do the nasty thing you really wanted, but was perfect in every other way. Your kinda stuck with it and in the end, and it's good for you.
It's a package, Troutman just came in here and said he's not happy with their television, but their radio is superior. And I agree.
Different people will find different value. But in the end it serves us all.
Now can we do it better? Of course we can. I like the 24 hour news+HNIC idea, unfortunately it's uninformed and it's not that simple. But scraping the CBC would detrimental to the country.

Nobody is finding any value in anything else besides their news, radio or HNIC. So shut the rest down and then see where you're standing financially.
It serves no purpose. I agree that the news does, although I disagree that you need a government run organization to provide balanced news.
I get most of my news on Google. But I understand that a lot of people watch the CBC for their news. Which is fine. It means they can turn a profit with their news.
But we shouldn't be giving them over a billion dollars every year to support the losses which in my opinion occur from the dumb shows they try to promote.

Well we might agree it can be done better. But it is still necessary. Scraping it, selling it, would be a big mistake.

I don't see what CBC news has to offer that CTV doesn't provide. And CTV does it with no funding. Their radio is popular, so maybe they could be reduced to that.
