“This was about the Toronto Blue Jays more than it is anything about the Baltimore Orioles,”LaCava said. “The Orioles were classy in everything they did and I think they are going to go down the right path. For me, it was how much I love the Toronto Blue Jays and I really, really treasure my relationship with my general manager, Alex Anthopoulos, and I really want to see this through with him.”

An interesting article on the players available in FA. They are guessing that we will get Ortiz, Darvish and Bedard. I think all Jays fans would be ecstatic to get those 3.

Obviously it is very unlikely this happens, but this was just a nice list to see who is available. Darvish would be an interesting pick-up, though insanely expensive and risky. I think a guy like Mark Buehrle would be a nice addition to this staff, as he is a consistent guy who will get 10-15 wins and log a lot of innings. I kind of hope we go after Francisco Rodriguez as well.

FYI: http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/1...ear-deal-.html

the Diamondbacks announced that they've agreed to terms with defensive specialist John McDonald on a two-year deal. Jack Magruder of FOXSportsArizona.com says the deal is worth $1.5MM per season (on Twitter). McDonald provides the Diamondbacks with insurance for Stephen Drew, who missed much of 2011 with a fractured ankle.

You don't go through the whole process to turn away last minute saying you'll stay.

Weird.

Talk is that something the Orioles' owner did or said rubbed LaCava the wrong way (as is the norm in Baltimore).

Yeah I've heard that LaCava wanted to get rid of some front office people that had been there a bit...and Angelos said no. Rumour is he has apparently been protecting/shielding these people from being turfed for a long time. At any rate Angelos is an issue for a lot of potential GMs out there interested in the position.

Pretty amazing that when he bought the team, they were one of the more lucrative franchises in the league with a fantastic new ball park selling out pretty much every night. But poor management, and several years of awful teams, and that team is struggling to draw fans. You'd think the owner would want to make a buck or two, and be willing to let a new GM try to change things, because what's going on...isn't working. But I guess a guy who started out and made his name as a labour lawyer, is now laying in the bed he made, protecting incompetent people who continue to run his organization into the ground.

The Toronto Blue Jays acquired Canadian reliever Trystan Magnuson from the Oakland Athletics on Friday for cash.

http://www.tsn.ca/mlb/story/?id=379654

2010/11/17 Oakland Athletics traded Rajai Davis to the Toronto Blue Jays for Trystan Magnuson and Daniel Farquhar.

Man free agency is starting off slow...

Interesting to hear trade talk around Jurrjens and the Oakland starters Cahill and Gonzalez. Some really good young arms there, pretty much just what the Jays typically go for age and skill wise. I do think Oakland will move one of those guys too, they haven't locked Gonzalez down contract wise yet and I think he is out of their price range with Cahill locked up, might be one or the other.

With the gaping hole the A's had at 1st last year I wonder if they could package Lind and a prospect for one of their starters if the Jays take salary back. Probably not to Oakland with Linds OBP last year.

Probably the most intriguing has been the talk around Lincecum although I do think there is nothing to it at this point.

I may be off base here a bit - just going off by memory - but I don't think Cahill and Gonzalez are highly regarded by some...product of oakland's stadium, overrated, etc.

With Jurjjens, Cahill and Gonzalez, they'd all be good 4/5 starters for the jays. While we do need at least one back of the rotation guy, we should not give up the farm for one.

Personally, I'd go with Gonzalez if it didn't cost an arm and a leg.

What I'd like to see in the rotation

Romero
New #2 starter
Morrow
Alvarez
New #4/5 starter

Cahill had an amazing year last season and really came out of no where to do it. Gio has been decent but has never really put it all together, even this year, he was very inconsistent.

The A's are making calls on both. I've been told they have chatted at length with the Marlins and Red Sox.

I'm a fan of Cahill. Solid #2 IMO. If he is up for grabs, I'd be shocked if AA's not on the phone finding out the price. He's not a fastball pitcher either, and like Halladay, relies on location and some movement. I'm not too concerned about injury prospects for the guy, so he'd seem like a great fit. C'mon AA, work your magic.

Also as a side note, I don't know why Oakland would be offering these guys up. Do they have other pitchers in the minors waiting to get a chance? If anything, Brett Anderson should be on the block because of his inability to stay healthy.

I can't believe the Yankees aren't involved in talks with the A's... Cahill or Gonzalez are perfect #2 starters that the club needs IMO. Same goes for the Blue Jays - Flick do you happen to have any idea what the A's are looking for in return?

I wonder if the Jays are going to bother with trying to get Yu Darvish in the end. I have the feeling the price is going to get stupid with the Yankee's needing another legit starter.

Seriously, you sound more delusional than any Oiler fan when it comes to the Blue Jays with your overevaluation of prospects, and how good Anthopolis is going to make the team. Any of those guys is easily the #2 starter for the Blue Jays, and aren't that far behind Romero for the #1 spot in the rotation.

I'm of the mindset that we need to get an ace so Romero is our number 2.

I like Ricky Romero, I just don't see us as a legit AL East contender if he's our number 1 guy.

As the comment on Romero, Romero is a #1 starter, to say the other names are not that far behind is a big reach imo. Basically saying all of them are #1 pitchers....

As for the Jays Prospects, there is a reason why the Jays Farm system is now top 3. AA has done a terrific job.
