Here's the thing about not giving notice in your case. You say you are moving to Costa Rica; right?

So if he is really that much of a jerk; what if he decides to withhold your last paycheque? Yes, I'm sure if you went to the labour board you may be able to get some of it back. But do you really want to be fighting that from abroad?

Is it worth 2 weeks pay to go out with a bang?

Exactly - it's the people you work with that will feel the most pain from you not giving the notice. Man up and do it the right way.

Ok changed my mind about notice, going to give it. Interesting thing about that is last time I quit, I gave notice proper way. I gave a letter to my boss and snail-mailed one to the office. Upon giving the letter to my boss, he opened it and said, "What the f is this?". I said, "It's my resignation letter." "What does cc mean?" "It means I've sent a copy to the office." He laughed me all the way back to work.

Took a personal day today (even though we don't get them). Nice way to end the week.

review that thread about leaving stuff drywalled into the walls at construction sites. Also I think I put in a little info about leaving something between 2 pieces of drywall.

Norm, pm me the owners name. I know someone who knows someone who owns a dw company, which I always thought was good, but I'm wondering...

I always teach my kids that how you behave is not a function of how 'they' behave, you do the right thing just because it's the right thing.

Does anyone remember the name of the website where employees post bad experiences about the company they work for?

I wish more people would enter reviews of workplaces, but results are quite limited. Here is one I used: http://www.glassdoor.com/

Totally unrelated story about myself giving my 2 weeks about a week ago.

I started a new position in the company I had been working for, for the last 3 years. I started it back the first week of April. I realized after about 3 months I don like the new job much and my boss is a bit of a self inflated jackass when he's not wiping the water from behind his ears. I thought maybe after a 2 week trip to Europe I would come back recharged and ready to give it hell once I go back. Not the case.

After getting back and working 3 days, my boss called me into his office and asked why I had not reached my sales number for the week, I explained that I know I missed it buy 18% but I was 2 days short in the week, my boss in return asked me is and I quote "would you like your unborn child to think of their father as a loser or someone gives up??" (my wife is expecting in March)

Thats was about the last straw and I did up a letter of resignation and went into the office first thing the next morning. I asked if I could get 2 minutes of his time at which time I told him about giving my notice and gave him my letter. To which he replied "I dont have time for this bulls**t, go home and I will call you later this week"

As I was walking out of the building I was called back into his office at which time both sales managers decided to talk to me like I was there 5 year old child. Telling me how stupid I was for doing this, how "bush league" it is for me to quit after being back f3 weeks from vacation, thats Im a "pathetic, waste of time", "will never make as much money anywhere else".

At this time I reminded them both that they have said time and time again that if you dont like coming to work or your job to do them a favor and quit, and that I was only doing EXACTLY what they had asked to be done. To which one replied "your ######ing pathetic, get out of my face".

Its funny how 3 years of solid work means nothing to people and that they cant take the fact that someone is trying to better themselves. A shame really for a fortune 500 company thats rated one of Canada's top 50 employers.

Long story short, I have been fishing 4 days this week and Im still getting pay cheques until Spet. 30 from those guys

Definitely took the high road on that one. Not sure I would have been able to take personal attacks like that without at least one smart a## comment being fired back at them.

Wow, Gundo I can't believe they think they can act like that. PM me the name of the company so I can be sure I never deal with them.

I dont even know what I'd do if my employer tried to talk to me like that.

I mean, speaking of burning bridges, was that an attempt to get you to change your mind? Screw that, I'd have slashed their tires or something for that.

Don't slash their tires. Place drywall screws pointing into their tires on the front and backside of each tire. Whichever direction they drive away they will have 4 flat tires.

On a somewhat related note, how would you guys suggest I go about asking for a raise in my current position?

I've recieved one raise after 1 year of employment, and this Sept. would mark the end of year 2. I also recently passed level 1 of the CFA exam, which I think should also be of value to my employer.

The one tricky thing is my boss can fly off the handle pretty quick, and I don't want to find myself in a position I can't maneouver out of.

Leave a particularly smelly and perishable foodstuff - fresh fish is good, in an impossible to find place in your bosses office.

Geez Gundo. My sympathies go out to you, I can relate to what you went through. Good on you for taking some time for yourself before getting back out there.
