Stars helicopters can carry a boat and a bunch of dive equipment? Plus divers? Funny they don't look that big on my calendar.

Damn straight. Any one with kids should live in a protective bubble and not leave the house.

Searching for missing people/objects is actually quite difficult in the best of circumstances, much worse underwater. Have you ever tried to search for something which you have no idea where it went? Not as easy as it sounds. Anyone who has lost a golf ball in knee deep bent grass could understand the difficulty.

I dont get what the big deal is, Chestermere is not part of Calgary, I assume they utilize the RCMP for policing so what if Calgary Firefighters feel snubbed - how is this a story in a newspaper.

As a taxpayer in the City of Calgary I would hope the services if offered would not be for free as Chestermere doesnt contribute to the City of Calgary tax fund. If need be they could undercut the RCMP fee so long as its not operating at a deficit position to do so.

And in this case he's up for a Darwin award because of his mistakes.

Not wearing a PFD while tubing is stupid. Not wearing a PFD while tubing and not being able to swim is beyond stupid. What happened was completely predictable.

But they would have a pretty good idea of where he went under, which should give them a pretty good area to look in. Correct me if I am wrong but the lake can't have much of a current to take the body far away from the actual area he drown at.

Not wearing a lifejacket in water when you can't swim is just sheer stupidity, not just a simple mistake.

What kind of idiot would go in that water period. It stinks - and I live in Chestermere.

I don't think you qualify for a Darwin Award if you have 7 kids. The award is for removing yourself from the gene pool. At this point his genes are out there.

A couple of years ago a co-workers son fell over while running on the path alongside a lake very similar, the boy hit his head on the concrete and fell into the lake. Even though they knew where abouts he fell it still took 12 hours to recover the body. The weeds held the body down and almost concealed it.
Why someone who can't swim would go tubing is beyond me.....

I don't think it was a case of not knowing how to swim; just being a poor swimmer. So it could be a case that his friends saw him hanging out in the deep end of a poor somewhere; and it didn't even dawn on them that he was a poor swimmer.

I'm not excusing the lack of a PFD; just trying to figure how it could happen.

Chestermere may have a joint-services agreement with Calgary, which they may pay for. If there is an agreement, Calgary would come out at no cost. It may have an agreement to share services with no payment.

I scuba dive and I don't think this life would have been saved. to get out there, get suited up and find that guy alive...well, the chances are very, very slim. I suppose you try despite the slight chance, but that would almost certainly be a recovery operation, not a rescue.

I think the firefighter that said this owes the family a huge apology as it is hard to imagine any mere mortal being able to be in Calgary and then get called out to Chestermere to save this guy.

I suppose if the justice league had been located in clagary, then aqua man could have gotten supper man to fly him out there......

The guy was pretty much asking to die if he couldn't swim and then proceeded to go tubing without a lifejacket.

Where does one make darwin nominations?
