I would hazard a guess that most of us are completely sure we know the meaning of many words that in fact we don't, couple that with the fact that many 'proper' dictionary meanings of words are in fact not how the words are used in the lingua franca, which is, at the end of the day, how words are defined in the english language and the test does become a little meaningless, that said 34,000 odd.

Perhaps, but people who don't know the difference between their, they're and there or say 'for all intensive purposes' are unlikely to be so well read as to be exposed to gems like, fuliginous, opsimath,or sedulous to name a few.

ETA: I didn't mean to suggest that anyone who has posted a high score is one of the people who has difficulties like those mentioned above. I was just responding to the idea that a poor speller/grammarian could have an extremely extensive vocabulary. I recognize that I am one of the people with one of the higher scores and some might question it but I would also question the very high average we seem to be achieving as a board so far. Having said that, there could be an element of selection bias going on here, since the nerdlier among us may be the only ones interested in clicking on a thread inviting us to test our vocabularies.
