I use this
It really has helped me a lot. I have had a lot of problems with irritation, mostly on my neck as I have very thick facial hair that doesn't seem to grow in any particular direction. A few drops of the oil after soaking my face/neck with a hot wash cloth does the trick for me

I'm intrigued by this safety razor process. once you get good at it how long does it take?

I'm also wondering where you would pick up a safety razor.

Use an electric razor and have a sweet gruff look all the time. It's not a close shave, but it's also not a pain in the ass.

I'm certain you could purchase a safety or butterfly safety razor online. Place here in the UK (Taylor's of Old Bond Street) ships internationally. You can purchase their nickel safety razor for £30 ($45) and shipping is £10 ($15). I'm not sure how much a quality safety razor costs in Canada, but I know that a friend of mine bought one and it looks nice, but doesn't have much weight too it, which means that you have to put more pressure on your face.
The length of time is the same as using any other type of razor, with the exception of a straight razor. If you use a brush and cream then it takes a minute or so longer.

I use this stuff exclusively:
Available here
Works wonderfully on my face and a tub will last me about 3 months (even then it's not exactly cheap).

Locally, http://www.rasagepoulin.com/ is where you want to check out. He's located on Beddington Blvd NW, call and make an appointment if you want to shop in person. Otherwise, the website is quite nice.

- Use Mach 3 or Excel razors.
- Don't press down on the razor.
- Rinse the blade after every stroke
- Clean up with cold water.
- No aftershaves or conditioners. Alcohol aftershaves give me burns and the other type gives me pimples.
I don't get the shave in the shower crowd. I've tried that a couple of times. Worst shave ever. Cream rinses off, get burned, miss spots.

This is my usual routine as well. It has been stated before, but also try to shave in just one direction, or rather just don't shave over the same area again in the opposite direction. Some of this depends on how much growth you have, too. If you're shaving daily, you'll need more moisture than if you do every 2nd or 3rd day.
Shaving in the shower though isn't difficult, depending on how you shower. I turn the water off after I am wet, and then I wash and rinse. If you leave the water on constantly. With a good flick of the wrist, you can get the whisker debris out of the razor.

London Drugs and Shoppers Drug Marts used to sell them, they were encased in a display in the shaving area.

I agree that the safety razor is the way to go. With a little time and practice, you'll have a BBS shave without any razor burn or bumps.
For some detailed information about shaving with a safety razor, I highly recommend the "Shave My Face" website ( http://www.shavemyface.com). They have a great forum section, with members who really know their stuff. There are also two sub-fora ("Selling & Trading" and "Shopping") in which you can get some great deals on razors/brushes/creams/blades/etc... this is very helpful when you don't want to spend huge money in trying out a new product.
For the record, here is the set-up I use:

I use this too. The downside is that if you don't wait long enough before shaving after applying it that my shave isn't as close as I'd like. However, if I get out of bed and wash my face the second I get up I have a good moisture level before I put the razorantium on. This leads to a better shave for me.

Why is it called a safety razor when it looks like the most dangerous thing that would ever come in contact with my face/throat?

I find that exfoliating you face with some kind of scrub/beads before shaving helps prevent with the irritating 10000000000x... I tend to have sensitive skin so I only shave every 3 days.

After reading this thread, I'm rather astonished at how complicated shaving is for some people.

I used to use a cheap electric and I felt like I was tearing a chunk of my face off every time I shaved. That meant I didn't bother until it got scruffy, and that only made the tearing a chunk of your face off sensation worse. It never gave a close shave either.
I switched to a cheap fusion with hot water and nivea shaving cream and never looked back. I also use the nivea after shave and that works well....has a slight stinging sensation but it's a good sting.
Sometimes I'll shave after I shower and that works too but I don't find it necessary.
I don't even remember what razor burn feels like anymore.
