We see balls fouled down the first or third base line all the time and fans don't even lean over at ground level. The ballboys always end up tossing the balls to little kids.
|
Actually we see people lean over ALL the time. It's incredibly common. Any ball within reaching distance down the lines has someone reaching over for it, and often winding up on the field. This guy just happened to be quite a bit higher. Heck, we saw somebody fall 30 feet at this very stadium last year.

Point is, yes its up to a fan to ensure they are aware of the surroundings but its also very much on the team and stadium to ensure that instances like this don't occur by making safety precautions. Especially when you have a 2.5 to 3 foot railing as the only protection over a15 foot drop.
|
Since people pay money for tickets to watch the game? Sightlines are a huge deal, raising that railing isn't an option. Look at the upper levels at the Dome, those railings used to be much higher and have now been replaced by glass, and I still hate sitting anywhere that requires me to look through it.

Come on you guys. Stop the blame game. It is a tragic event.
How high are the railings at the Saddledome? If you guys think this is so important why don't you immediately call the Flames and demand they raise those bars higher.

If it was anything like watching a sibling (my sister), it will affect him for life. However, I do wish I was a lot younger when that happened, then it would not have been so vivid in my mind. I was 21.

If memory serves, a guy fell over the railing at the Dome before. I think it was from the 200s to the 100s, and I think that he injured a person or two that he fell on. My memory is fuzzy on the details, but I know that it happened.
I'm not saying the the railing are too low or anything, but your post just reminded me of it.

Your last part is true, the stadium needs to be better protected.
But I watch alot of baseball games and rarely do I see a person down the line falling onto the field of play. Don't think I've seen a single one this year.

I think everyone is well aware that it's a tragic event so thanks for pointing that out. But I don't think a discussion of what can be done to prevent something like this in the future should be stopped.

I think the chances of someone reaching for a puck in the upper level at the Saddledome are considerably less than reaching for a baseball at a ballpark.

Maybe you should pay closer attention. I've been to half dozen Yankee games this year and seen it happen at half of them. I've also seen a number of fans tumbling onto the field clips show up on sportscenter this year, just as I have every year. It's very common.

Happened at a Sens game a few years, where a guy trip and fell from the 300s into the 200s.

They need to put glass screens around all the C-Train stations and rubber walls along the length of 7th Ave in order to stop the unessential injuries/deaths.....oh, wrong thread.
They're called freak accidents for a reason, we might as well just start wearing bubble wrap clothing.

My point is that people seem to come out and bad mouth the team after the event happens. So since these posters have all the answers and I assume they go to Flames games. Then they should get off their soap box and go to the Flames and makes sure they add nets and higher railings to make sure this doesn't happen in Calgary.
Everybody in each city should do this. Get out there before something tragic happens in your home city.

Your point is stupid because this wasn't the first incident of this type at that ballpark. It was the third time it has happened. What's more adding a net in the empty area between the stands and the fence is a lot easier than doing the same in a hockey arena.
So maybe get your facts straight before you get all sanctimonious, okay?

I am not being sanctimonious about it at all. I am saying if people think changes should be made then they should stand up and effect change now before another incident happens.

Sad this guy died - no way to go, but even worse that his young son watched his Dad fall to his death. Makes my stomach queasy thinking about it - parenthood has made me such a softie.

This isn't a freak accident. A freak accident is having a helicopter crash and land on you when you are out getting the mail (like that kid in Cranbrook a few years ago).
This is something that can be analyzed, improved upon, and made safer. It was a death that occured within fairly normal conditions of what happens at the stadium and a baseball game. It has nothing to do with putting people in bubble wrap.
Burying your head in the sand and saying "oh well" serves no purpose.

I had to google sanctimonious, but agreed 100%.
Fans don't lean over the 300's for pucks thrown by Jarome Iginla. Hockey fans rarely have any reason to lean over the railing.
In baseball this is a game by game occurence. Not only do fans lean over railings for balls they actually push and shove like that ball is worth millions. (sometimes it is)
