That depends so much on where you work and what your personal life/leisure activities are like.

Basically anything but NE and SE are ideal. Those two areas (specifically Franklin, Forest Lawn, Dover, Ogden etc) aren't considered prime places to a lot of people. I don't want to slag those areas too hard because I'm sure there are CPers who live in those areas and love it, just going on the stereotypes and (perceived?) crime rates in those areas.

I live in the NW and wouldn't go anywhere else unless it was closer to downtown. Access to Stoney Tr and Crowchild beats the hell out of Deerfoot and Macleod. IMO at least.

I'm currently in the NW, and love it, but a great area is the Glamorgan area south of Richmond Road, north of Glenmore in the SW. Good shopping near by with Westhills/Signal Hill a stones throw away, and easy access to the rest of the City due to the easy access of Crowchild and Glenmore. It's a really nice, established, and well kept community.

Don't listen to Cecil, he smokes crack which is abundant in the NW. The community associations give it out during Stampede breakfasts and demand your children sell it on the corners.

The SW is clearly the best part of the city.

Edit: Also, MastodonFarm pimps in the NW and he's not a friendly pimp either. My forehead still says "HOE F'SHO" after I failed to pay one of his ladies full price. But to be fair, she ate half my delissio. She owed me.

I regret that.

You should have paid half price, since technically she was half a lady.

Well, I will be working basically downtown...So I don't know how close I want to live to DT, but not too far away obviously.

That's why I was so surprised and angry when she ate my pizza. I put it on the counter figuring she wouldn't be able to reach...what with the lack of legs and all.

So can anyone else comment on areas we should stay out of for sure? Are there others who would say Franklin, Forest Lawn, Dover & Ogden are bad?

We are looking for a townhouse, most likely $1200 a month or of course less if we can get it. Would like 3 bedrooms, 2 + den or could live with 2 bedrooms if the price is right in the right area. We have a small dog and a cat, both very well trained and very behaved.

For a townhouse of that size, you will probably be looking at $1500 with utilities. In the south at least. Unless you move in a brand new area, but then commute times would be horrendous. This is based off when I was looking for a place under a year ago. I suppose times could have changed.

Try the coach hill area or in the surrounding areas. It's only a ten-fifteen minute drive to downtown, but is on the outskirts. There should be some good rental properties in the area.

It's an interesting option.

Really? I've been looking at Renfaster.ca and see a lot of townhouses in the $1200 range, some even less. We simply can't afford $1500 a month. If we have to live in Forest Lawn, I suppose we might have to...don't know what else to do.

Here you go OilKiller.

http://www.rentfaster.ca/calgary-apa...RJTkcxNDA0Mw==

Right in Kensington. 2 bedrooms. Utilities extra though.

Another one in Sunalta, looks a lot nicer.

http://www.rentfaster.ca/calgary-con...RJTkc2Njg3Ng==

This one is right downtown, would take you about 5 minutes to walk to work.

http://www.rentfaster.ca/calgary-apa...RJTkczNTg1Mw==

All of these places you could walk to work. They aren't townhouses, but you won't need to use your car much.

Hope that helps and welcome back from hell.

The first two places mentioned above are in the basement (1/2 below grade) of buildings. Not sure if that matters to you, but it does to some people, so they're usually cheaper. (There was a thread about that awhile ago)

Agree that you're probably going to have to choose between an inner city apartment style option or being on the outskirts in a townhouse at that budget. Neither option is necessarily bad, they're just different.

I think the better question would be "Is there anybody who doesn't think these areas are bad?"

I might move to Ogden if the price was right.

Thanks guys...I'm not too worried about living super close to downtown. If I have to drive a distance to get to work, so be it. We might even look at places like Strathmore (my Mom and sister both live there).

As to the areas that some think are not very good to live in, the same can be said about certain areas here as well and I have friends who live in some of those "areas" and they are just fine, so we are not going to limit ourselves I guess. If it's a choice between a crappy place in a nice area or a nice place in a crappy area, I'll take the latter every time. We can always move again I guess once we are in Calgary and got things straightened away.

While it's looking like it might be a bit of a commute with me working downtown, we found a really nice place in Evergreen. I'm assuming it's a nice neighbourhood?
