Am I the only person who doesn't really know what the difference between #1, #2, #3, or however many options there are? I always just ask for short on the sides, and longer on top. I guess that is #2 according to every barber/haircutter in the World.

One of these days I always think I'll end up coming out bald, or with a green mohawk just by asking for the #2.

I really wish the haircut was more like a drive-thru so I actually have a certain understanding of what I am ordering.

The only haircut I have ever wanted is David Duchovny's haircut in one of the middle seasons of the X-Files (I think I could pull it off). However, I have never had the nerve to ask the usual old ladies, or Asians who usually cut my hair.

Another question; do you tip your barber? My haircuts usually cost $20 for just a basic cut, so for that price I think a tip is asking a bit much...

Here are the general lengths specified by the different numbered length guards:
• #1 – one-eighth of an inch
• #2 – one-quarter of an inch
• #3 – three-eighths of an inch
• #4 – one-half of an inch
• #7 – seven-eighths of an inch
• #8 – one inch

The #5 and #6 length guards are special tapered guards designed for tapering the hair in an area of the head. One end of the guard is generally longer while the other is much shorter and the lengths graduate in between the two.

One of the best parts of the haircut is that your face is literally boob level with the hairdresser, and only inches away. God bless hair salons.

A #2 is not a hair cut, it is the attachment on the clippers. If you get just a #2 then you have a "buzz" cut all over your head. No different length hair, just a #2 all over.

Haha, that's why after you start shaving your own head, you go for more regular teeth cleanings.

Invariably I end up needing some new product to keep the proper look for the next month and a half, and I always buy the same brand. I have like, five different hair styling products with the same brand-name sitting on my bathroom counter.

30 years old, no grey, not a single hair lost and my stylist always comments on how thick my hair it. Just to rub it in on all y'all baldies.
What's this free trim business?

Sorry but what is a number two?

I always kept my hair rather short, but the last few years I have kept it kind of shaggy, and I like it. I tried to grow it out to shoulder length but couldn't stand it so I cut it back down to shaggy. I think for the summer I would like to try something else out though, not sure what yet.

Ninja edit: I see the #2 listed above.. nice. I can't pull off the buzz look, I have a misshapen head and a receeding hair line.

At age 27 my hair dresser says if I was going to go bald early, it would have hapened by now. But I have my doubts.. and because of this I decided to grow the hair out to enjoy it while I got it. A lot of people look good bald, I actually have a friend that went bald and he rocks it, looks better than he did before. However, I know I can't pull it off..

Down to the wood with clippers every ten days to two weeks or so. The last time I had a hairstyle was about 7 years ago.

Last time I changed my hair style, I was about six and the change was from a muffin cut to a part on the right side, number two on the sides.

during the summer, I usually do the #2, than when winter comes I go from to a mohawk to a short faux mo to a faux hawk than it starts all over again at #2.

Getting your hair shampooed and scalp massaged is even better.

I change my hairstyle all the time. Most of the time I'll just go into a stylist and ask them to do whatever they think will look good on me and will be low maintenance so that I get something stylish without having to worry or care about it at all. I also like to have some fun sometimes. One of my best was shaving the top of my head like I had pretty severe male pattern baldness. That one was a lot of fun and a really great social experiment.

Somehow I don't think shaving a horseshoe on purpose in China is necessarily a bad thing . . . I think bald men are more revered there anyways lol . . .

I'm also a #2 guy. 38 and I still have a full head of hair...but boy am I going grey. I'm kind of lazy about getting regular haircuts and the grey is fairly hidden somehow when my hair is growing out. I'm appalled by all of the grey/white hair on the floor when I get a cut...I think in another couple of years I'll be all white.
