My favs (in no order): Pho Kim (oldschool fav, havent been in years), Co Do, Vietnamese Palace (16th ave and 4th st nw - moreso good for the vermicelli bowls but good Pho too), Quynh (by Sunridge theatre) and Giang Nam (really small place, almost no english spoken, but dam good!).

Didnt read through every post so I likely repeated a couple.

I do believe there under new management. I remember them being slow but the broth was good there.

Same. And it really sucks because I'm about 700 km from home.

My personal favourite is this one. I love their Lemongrass chicken and spring rolls bun with dumplings as a starter.

It's right across from Peter's Drive In

Yeah its a great spot, I have had maybe 6-8 different things off of their menu and everything is awesome, everything is cheap and the owners are always great to deal with (despite the language barrier!).

my top 10 pho restaurants in calgary:

1. Pho Thanh
This is my favorite place because it's affordable, authentic, and portions are huge. Soup is very tasty. The atmosphere adds to the authenticity, because it's not fancy schmancy like a lot of the westernized vietnamese restaurants. Best place in the NW for sure.

2. Basil
This place has awesome pho satay! Very unique broth, with a slight peanut-y flavor, very tasty! The owners were the former owners of the old Pho dau bo. Prices are a bit on the high side, but the decor is very nice, and it's probably the cleanest vietnamese restaurant in the city.

3. Pho Xuan
Located in the strip mall across from T&T supermarket in the NE. This place is similar to Pho Thanh, but a bit less clean. I haven't been here in a while, mainly due to the location. Tasty pho, but I believe their vermicelli options are limited.

4. Pho Binh Minh
Located on 17th avenue SE in the strip mall next to Tiger Direct. They say all the best places are in the ghetto, and this place, along with Pho dau bo can attest to that.

5. Pho Hoang Long (same owners as viet sub express) on 17th ave SW by the tim hortons. This place has awesome bun bo hue! Pho is very tasty as well, and the owners are super friendly.

6. Pho Hoai
Probably the oldest Pho place in the city, located inside of the far east shopping centre. I haven't been here in a while, but their pho was awesome from what i remember. the downside is the location. it's super busy during the weekday lunch rush, and parking is scarce.

7. Pho so 1
I frequent this place the most because of it's convenience. it's located just off centre street in the central landmark shopping plaza. on a side note, that parking lot has got to be the worst parking lot in the city. anyone who's been here will know what i mean. especially with that "lake" that covers half the parking lot.

8. Pho Chu the
This place is probably the best pho restaurant near the chinook area. Every other restaurant (Oriental phoenix, bagolac, golden bell, etc) are overpriced and horrible tasting. Chu the is located just across the street from hooters on macleod, at the base of the apartment buildings. They've got quite a bit of asian customer base, this is always a good indication.

9. Nha Trang Restaurant
I recently discovered this place in Panatella. It was surprisingly good! for those who live in the NW, it's known as the quadrant of the city for crappy pho. This place has really good pho satay. the prices are pretty high though. $9.50 for a large.

10. Pho Dau bo
more or less similar to pho binh minh. owners have changed, menu is smaller, but still good pho

Is there a place in town where you don't smell like pho when you leave? it's great stuff but my jacket really stinks after.

Just got back from having some Pho. This place has some great broth but I found the portions of meat rather small. I also thought the noodles were undercooked and chewy but they were fine when I got to the bottom. I would go back again but I think im going to try Basil's next, especially since they have the former owners of Pho dau bo and I was always curious what happened to them.

On a side note does anyone know what happened to Chu Longs, it used to be located where Mei Kongs is now. Its been Mei Kongs for several years now.

I actually love that place. I went there to eat the day after it first opened and the owners still remembered me almost 4 years later. Great food, and it's always being watched by the police so you can eat feeling safe!

Unless you're a criminal! Or maybe that's why the police are there...because it's a crime hang out. The plot thickens!

Anyone ever try the Toa Restaurant downtown on 6th Ave and 6th Street (by Friday's staffing).

Any good? I want to take my staff there but I'm kind of scared.

It's better than Spring Roll Chalet. Prices average about $10 for pho, vermicelli and the rice. The place is very clean and the service very quick. I've only had their pho, but it's a bit better than some of the other places in the core outside of chinatown.
