Honestly, I think you're way out in left field in regards to the 1988 Winter Olympic logo being "ugly" or that "artistically it's quite lacking."

As someone who designs logos I find the clean lines and definition to be quite appealing. The simplicity of the logo along with all the elements it incorporates makes it translate well across a number of different mediums (print, merchandising, video, etc.) in either full colour or black & white.
Well it's ultimately a subjective opinion, so to each his own...

But that being said, I find it to be way too busy, it doesn't incorporate the Olympic colours, even in the Olympic rings themselves, and ended up looking much more like the old Plymouth logo than a maple leaf.

That is actually the old Daimler-Chrysler logo, and I thought the exact same thing when I saw the Calgary logo.

Plymouth along with Dodge, Jeep and Eagle are Daimler-Chrysler subsidiaries. They all have their own logos now but didn't then so you see a Plymouth or Dodge with the Chrysler logo.

As for the Vancouver logo, I don't mind it at all. And I'm pretty sure it's not supposed to be a person. It's an inukshuk. Maybe growing up on Vancouver Island I got more of an education in Native traditions, but I'm surprised most people don't realize it's an inukshuk. I remember one day in grade three our class went to the beach and we all made inukshuks. It was actually pretty fun and it looked really cool.

Do they even have those in B.C.?
No! Which p*sses me off.

This is Vancouver and Whistlers Olympics. Not BCs and certainly not Canadas. The symbol was chosen because it represented all of Canada, well you know what? fata that! We didn't win this bid because people like Saskatoon. The IOC didn't say "Hey Vancouver needs to win because St.Johns is just such a cool place!" It didn't happen.

I want to see mountains, trees and a pot leaf in the BC olympic logo, not an inuit rock statue that isn't even found in BC. [/rant over]
I'm not completely sure why I'd wading into this argument, but I half agree with Blaster.

I don't think these are Canada's games. I think the success or failure of the Olympic team is Canada's to share, but the host cities and their provincial partners deserve the credit for these games. I think for everyone to tack themselves on is unfair. Its the kinda smarmy feeling that we all felt when everyone was calling the Flames "Canada's team" when only weeks before they were a bunch of bums and the team with the least national coverage.

I feel that Montreal's games were Montreal's and the Province of Quebec's.

Calgary's game were Calgary's and to a lesser extent Canmore's, as well as the Province of Alberta.

That being said, I feel these games are truly Vancouver, Whistlers and the Province of BC's. I mean, lets be honest, if the games go in the red, its probably not gonna be the Feds that bail them out, but the province of BC.

I think if you go to any regionalized country, they'd say the same thing. I don't think people from Atlanta or Salt Lake would say those were America's games. They'd mostly likely say it was their games, meaning the city and the state that supported it.

That being said, the 2010 logo really sucks. Its that stupid smile that cheapens it.

I can't counter that, there is no way Vancouver can cover all that, but still. The IOC didn't choose Vancouver because of the country it's in.
Wow.... That just reeks of arrogance....

Yup, I have to agree with everybody here. I'm sorry Blaster, but I will take everything that you say with a grain of salt.
Probably best. I am one of those people who thinks Vancouver should be the center of the Universe, not Toronto. =-o
