What the hell is going on this year? Is this all due to La nina?
The 91 year-old aunt of one of my self-described "old farm wife" clients says this one and the last few have been the worst combination of winters since either "1948-51 or 1949-52." She couldn't remember which.

I mentioned that to another oldtimer today and he remembered those winters well and agreed.

It really has been a pretty unusual last three winters but particularly this one.

I'd normally have green grass around the house right now and would be getting ready to cut down the 2.5 acres of tall grass I let grow through the summer . . . . but that's still under at least a foot of snow southwest of the city.

The snowpack in the mountains is about one-third deeper than normal.

It's certainly not unusual to get big snowfalls in March and particularly April and May. Two years ago, we had a big dump on June 6 I believe.

But I think I could go run in shorts and a tee right about now. Nice day.

Spring of '08 was pretty bad. It snowed enough, and when it wasn't snowing it was raining, right up until when I left on June 10th.

Months are pointless to me. I just think of weather by having three main components with no timeframe. Snow, grass, leaves.

I remember the spring of 2009 it was nice, then a dump of snow would happen, then cold weather, then its nice again, then a dump of snow. It was May and no leaves were on the trees yet, I was planning my move back to B.C and when I left Alberta I beat the next snowfall by 2 days.

All I know is that if the weather in Calgary is beautiful or whether it is horrid, people will complain about the weather.

It is just what people do.

That is until someone not from this city bitches about the weather. Then it is all about bashing the weather of somewhere else.

They'll either bring up rainy Van, humid T.O., natural disasters in the states, even colder places like Edmonton or Sask, bugs etc.

At least we're not living in Winnipeg (I have no idea how the weather has been in Winnipeg, it's just a general statement).

Winnipeg gets warmer earlier. The grass is already green in parts of Ontario.

Heat unit accumulation is where most places have us beat.

In Puerto Vallarta a few weeks ago. I was talking to a lady in a shop one night about the cool weather (it was only about a high of 23°C that day). She said that evening was the first time she could remember in thirty odd years living there she was cold enough to put on a sweater.

Sometimes it seems like my memory gets erased as the seasons change. I have no idea what the weather was like last spring. Heck, I can barely remember February - we had a warm spell, yes?

I think it is pretty much a guarantee at this point. Like Cowperson mentioned, the snow pack in the mountains is a third higher than normal.

To get the bad flooding there has to a perfect storm of big snow pack and heavy rains.

I think the fact that its April almost and we still have snow packs from January a little telling. Normally it melts and then snows again and then melts... this year it just doesnt melt (not warm enough) and then snows more on top of the old pack.

I fear green grass wont be here for a long long time

It's made for one of the best winters in a long time for walking the dog. No hastle in having to wash the dog afterwards.

The green grass with all the mud, slush and water will be here all too soon for me...if it hasn't begun already.

I call them "weather martyrs" about how THEIR weather is so much worse than yours. No matter what.

And you know it's coming when they say "that's nothing...." in reply to your comment about current weather.

Among the worst are Newfs -- I grew up in Ottawa where (weather martyr on) we got a lot more snow than here in Calgary... but every time I'd mention how the snow storm with 35 cm of snow was bad and I hated shovelling it, next thing you know Newfie Tim is going "that's nothing. In Newfoundland, we have 200 metres of snow a year!"
