How much are their rates? More than $100 I imagine?
If so, OP is far better just showing his face in front of a Prosecutor and bargain the ticket down to 50% with minimal work. If this ticket had demerits and OP was worried about too many accumulating, or had other future consequences only then would I go to someone like POINTTS.
Here's a great read from the government regarding traffic tickets. http://www.albertacourts.ab.ca/pc/tr...eencharged.pdf

I went about 10 years ago and it would have been $500 to fight a $300 ticket (w/ some demerits). I assume it is at least that much now.

Rathji, I see you are on a battle to detour the contact of a company that specializes in this stuff but just take a second to absorb some things.
They are specialists that have evolved since your time when an icecream cone only cost a nickel and school was uphill both ways.
I have used POINTTS over 10 times and have either:
-accepted their cost and been represented for a demerit related ticket and won 100%
-accepted their cost and been represented for a non-demerit related ticket and won 100%
-listened to their FREE assessment and chosen to deal with it myself using some of the recommendations they provided for FREE and won 100%
The payments are always cheaper than the ticket cost and the only time I've lost a single demerit was when I used a POINTTS competitor that was recommended by a friend and he could only get my penalty slightly reduced.
My speculation is that they are basically buddies with the Crown and have a fast walk in/walk out with instant results.

Go in to court on the scheduled date and ask to speak to the Justice of the Peace. Explain your story and that you are not actually contesting the ticket but seeing if it is possible to reduce the fine amount based on your current financial situation.
They may reduce the ticket for you and the police officer won't care because you're not actually fighting the ticket.

To be honest, I've never seen a fail to produce insurance ticket ever reduced. Its either been found guilty or dropped all together...there isn't really any middle ground. There isn't a lesser offence they can plead it down to.
I guess one advantage when you make your first appearance is you can ask for time to pay...which usually they are pretty lenient about.

Well I've once had a speeding ticket reduced to a parking in a fire lane ticket and I used points on that ticket. Also the savings from the $300 ticket to the $150 ticket was more than enough to pay the guy. It was the demerits I never lost which were most important.
I was shocked that they could do that.
Those guys have serious connections with judges or the prosecutors.

Its more cause those offences can be plead down to lesser offences....ie. a 20 km/h over ticket can be plead down to 10 km/h. a fire lane parking ticket can be reduced to a park wrong way ticket.
They can't just say we cut the $172 in half.

What possible reason would I have to defer someone from contacting POINTTS? I mentioned what my experience was, the time that had passed since it happened and also included my assumption, based on inflation, that in 10 years the price would be at least the same.
I am glad you have had a good experience with them in the 10 times you have received traffic tickets, unfortunately I don't have any tickets more recent than 10 years ago to compare results with, so I will trust your assessment.

And FWIW, a no insurance ticket (ie. you don't have insurance on your vehicle), is automatic court, and if found guilty, is just over $2800 fine for your first offence. It usually doubles every time after if you're caught again.

Phone the crown prosecutor's office and deal it down to the original penalty which is something like $57.

As I recall, when they started handing out failure to produce proof of insurance tickets more often, a compelling factor was they would hand out a no insurance ticket and it would get fought because most of the time they actually did have insurance, but not the current paperwork in the vehicle. The end result was often a increase in court costs but less ticket income, so they prioritized the failure to produce proof tickets instead.
Maybe my memory is skewed though, anyone know if this is even remotely true?

There's a process in place that if you get a no insurance tickets, you have 14 days to attend a police office with the ticket and various documents proving you have insurance , and the ticket will automatically get canceled.

So I recently got a "failure to yield" ticket which was semi-deserved. It's a $172 ticket, but I'm not sure about demerits, or if there is any way I can fight it, I'm a poor student ps.
EDIT: Also this is my first ticket ever so can I just mail them the payment, or do I have to go to court?

Why can't people just be accountable for their actions? A few months ago I got a seatbelt ticket. My first seatbelt ticket in 14 years. I always wear my seatbelt, this time I just happened to drive off the parking lot of the recycling place and was about to put it on when I was pulled over. I wasn't on the road for more than 15 secs.
But you know what, I didn't complain about it. I broke the law. I should have had my seatbelt on before I started moving and I didn't. I took the ticket and paid it. Yes, it sucks that I always wear my seatbelt and this one time I didn't put it on before I left I got a ticket but that is life. I made a choice and I lived with the consequences.
Suck it up and pay the fine. If you can't afford it you can go to court and they can give you community service instead of the fine.

because despite not following the rules, breaking the law, and getting caught ... they still think they were in the right.
I really think they should not allow court battles for stuff like this (speeding tickets, no seat belts, etc) because it's just a waste of tax payer money for the courts, massive back log, etc .... all for people to try saying how breaking the law was not their fault and try to get out of it. If you are in that case, you obviously broke the law.

Is this a thing? When I was a minor I was, uh, forced to uh, do community service and enjoyed it immensely. I enjoy volunteering now too, but am way to lazy to commit to it regularly.

Well someone can correct me if I am wrong but I am sure the judge can still change it to community service if he so chooses.

Cool. That'll come in handy when we're busted for playing games whilst driving.
