Speaking of left turn sensors in Calgary, they never work while on my motorcycle. I have to wave a following car up to my back fender so the car trips the sensor. I looked up the law in such a case and it appears, if the sensor isn't working, you can treat it as a four way stop and proceed when safe.

I did the same thing on Memorial turning onto Edmonton Tr to go downtown. After 3 or 4 lights I ran up to the guy in front and told him, "You have to move ahead or the light won't change". He then proceeded through the red light and almost got t-boned.

It amazes me the amount of people who do not understand the most basic of road signs... like a Yield vs. a merge.

The lights use inductive loops to acknowledge there is a vehicle there. You should be able to see the line in the asphalt where the workers cut the road to install the lines. Your motorcycle should be enough to complete the loop, but perhaps not. Make sure you're right overtop of the lines and the steel in your bike should make the circuit.

Failing that. you should get off your motorcyle go to the pedestrian lights and walk your cycle across the road like a bicycle.

Oh yeah, like I'm slow and can't figure out where the loop is. Calgary's set up just doesn't recognize motorcycles very well as I have no problems in BC.

Ya, some provinces do, and in fact my AMA instructor told me the same thing. But alas, I only followed it during the exam.

On left hand turns, what annoys me are the people who coast while they are sitting in the intersection waiting for oncoming traffic to clear up. You know the type... the impatient ones who will keep creeping forward like it's going to get them there faster. Then ooops, they are actually past the halfway point, with the lane they are turning onto directly to their left at 90 degrees. At this point, a sane person would stop, but nooooooo, they keep at er, coasting towards the other side of the intersection. When the light finally turns yellow, they now have to pull an acute angle turn, greater than 90 degrees, which takes them longer to do so. Even worse in winter when they can't get traction because the wheel is cranked all the way over.

Worse is when they creep so far forward, they impede the cars turning coming from the opposite direction.

One thing I remember is that Right of Way is not taken, it's given. If a guy doesn't look like he's gonna stop at a 4 way stop (like if he has no signs of slowing down until like 10 feet from the sign, even if I got there first, I'm gonna wait, no use putting my life at risk over a guy not stopping at a 4-way stop

I don't know what the law is, and I always pull in to the intersection as well. But I saw a guy on Nose Hill do this once, didn't get to make the turn till the light was basically red and the cop behind him pulled him over.
