The guy says it wouldn't be as bright as the full moon, but then goes on to say it may cast a shadow. A bit contradicting, but I'm of the mind it wouldn't cast any shadow of any sort.

umm he wasn't the one who brought up religion, that was peter12. Leave religion out of this, this is science not science fiction.

Everything casts a shadow if there's a light source and something opaque. Stars cast shadows.

The question is does it cast enough light to be able to see the shadow, I've been out on clear bright full moon nights and been able to see my shadow.

Be quiet, Peter the great brought it up and you have the nerve to spaz on me after you thanked him for it.

Lawrence Klauss (astrophysicist I think) was just interviewed on the news and said it would probably shine at about -14 (whatever that means) or about 2.5 times greater than our moon. He also said it's unlikely to happen by 2012 but did say once the star shows signs of shrinking it can go nova very fast. It is also unlikely that it could become a black hole because it's not heavy enough.

Amazes me how much they know about objects that far away

If they meant that they should have said that.

And I don't need astronomy lessons pal. Betelgeuse is actually ~150,000 times brighter than the sun.

Let's talk about brightness. How many times brighter do you think the sun is compared to the moon (as they appear to us in the sky)? Make the same comparison with Venus and the moon. Try to guess without looking it up.

I think the PC term would be "little star"

Why so irritated and arrogant? I think it was just common sense.

And without looking it up. a lot considering they don't have their own light source and are just reflecting light, unless you consider a volcano on Venus a light source.

And I'm not here to give you astronomy lessons "pal". I don't even own a telescope.

It's not common sense at all. How bright something "appears" is called "apparent magnitude", as opposed to how bright something really is - "absolute magnitude".

It's an ignorant article, and your OP - especially the thread title - is equally ignorant. For once in my CP life, I'm going to have to agree with peter12.

I don't think the world will end on Dec. 21/2012, but based on pure speculation/guessing I think something significant will happen, including one of the following:

-maybe the world ditches the US dollar in 2012?

-ensuing economic unrest, riots, police state etc.?

-maybe the sun gives us a blast of electro-magentic radiation and ruins electrical grids all over the world?

-a large scale terror event in America?

-some kind of severe escalation of the war in the middle east? Perhaps things escalate between Israel, Iran, Pakistan etc..

-maybe North/South Korea will finally drop the mitts?

I really hope it will be an unprecedented, much publicized UFO/alien incident that shocks the world.

I hope you don't take your personal life as seriously as an article from Time

Since your jeering me for posting it I suspect you do...so very sad, maybe peter12 can help you find yourself.

Peter12 brought up hilarious irony. You brought up bashing the bible for no reason all the while insulting him and anyone who believes in god.

This is a given within the next 2-3 years. Be interesting to see how we manage with no internet, sattelites, ect.. until it gets repaired.
