I went to Mexico one time and will never return. After leaving the bar late one night, my friend duct down a loading dock to have a piss. Well, a cop happened to see him. he threw my buddy up against the wall turned him around grabbed his wallet, took out all the cash, gave his wallet back and told us to beat it.
And these are the people responsible for upholding the law.

Pleease.
Basically every post in this thread suggests...if you go to Mexico, don't get drunk and act like an idiot and you'll be fine.
You're buddy's lucky he didn't get a new ass ripped open for him also.
Behave, don't do anything stupid that you wouldn't do here.
One saying I never forget when I'm there.... this is Mexico, and this is how they do things. Mexico's awesome, I love it.
Well I can only speak from the experience of living in a town right on the border with Mexico. From all reports I've heard about things on the Mexican side of the border have gotten real bad. I can't really speak about the tourist areas but along the border areas most of the cops are on the take and I've heard that the President of Mexico is considering calling in the military and disbanding the police forces in those areas.
The reporters in Mexico generally don't even report on the drug wars now because the drug cartels were killing any reporter that did. I would love to cross over but until things do I think I'll stay put on the US side and enjoy the beach at South Padre Island.
Let me clarify, I'm not saying Mexico is a piece of crap along with their people. I am only saying the current violence would deter me from visiting atm. The Dominican is a beautiful place and the earthquake in haiti was on the opposite side of the island as punta cana (the DR is NOT Haiti or have the same conditions). If you go to Santo Domingo it is not a really clean place (beaches outside the city are littered) but they are spending money to clean it up (punta cana is in the southeast corner). The DR is not completly developed as they seem to build roads with shovels but I have not had a bad experience there. Plus there is a serious lack of Americans who visit which is nice and a lot of the hotels are run by Canadians. A lot of Canadians and Americans there.
The drug violence in Mexico is too bad as the mayority of Mexicans are great people with big hearts and great food. The Mexican police are as corrupt as they come but many posters are right that keeping your nose clean will help keep your wallet full but I really dont trust that fully.
IMO the Dominican is a better vacation and i've been to both, I really enjoyed the service in the DR (mexico was ok too but everything seems more crowded there). If your looking to relax on the beach I would pick the DR, but if your looking for more adventure and ruins (ect.) Mexico is great for that kind of stuff but I would stay away from the west coast and the north. I enjoyed the water in the DR better and had a great time with the locals (drinking rum on a deep sea fishing boat). Of course the people in the DR dont have much but they are very happy and friendly. You see some Haitians that have come across the border before the earthquake and they are worried about their famillies back home but they love Canadians for all the help we've provided to them.
Read a map and realize the 'murder spree' in Mexico is limited to lawless areas of the North, usually bordering the USA, and are gang wars between drug cartels.
BTW last time I was in the DR it was after the earthquake and nothing was effected there besides the Haitians who immigrated to the DR and have familly back in Haiti
I've been to Mexico 5 or 6 times, and have never had a problem. Based on experience, it's a much safer alternative to other places I have visited, including Jamaica and the Dominican.
4 years ago we were down in Puerto Vallarta for my wedding. The first night we were down there we decided to go swimming at night in the ocean right in front of our resort.
yet another example.
its illegal almost everywhere to swim at night.
i suppose that if you had an incident and drowned or got hurt, you would be blaming and suing someone too, right?

I’m always amazed these sportscasters and announcers can call the game with McDavid’s **** in their mouths all the time.
Yeah, some 28,000 people have died since 2006 due to the drug wars, but all the action has remained relatively close to the border. Suddenly Afghanistan doesn't look too bad.....
If you leave the resort area, just mind your own business and don't even make eye contact with the cops.

Gunmen open fire on soccer players, kill 7. The sign above the body reads "Live Better" in spanish.
Quote:
A group of heavily armed men opened fire at a soccer match between two local teams in western Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, killing seven people and wounding two others, according to a municipal police spokesman.
The soccer field is at a community center opened four months ago as part of a program to decrease drug violence in a city that has been racked by violence and killings linked to drug cartels. Police said Monday they had not determined a motive for the shooting.
The Mexican police are either too afraid or are part of these guys to bring them down, This is close to a civil war, if the Mevican government wants a country left maybe they should get on their knees and beg the US military to come smoke these idiots out and kill them all.
That is just dastardly. I wonder what would happen if gangs / cartels tried to pull this in Russia or somewhere where brutal retaliation isn't out of the question.
I am starting to think that the government of Mexico is losing control. And quickly. This is a very scary and real possibility.
