Do you ever do mountain scrambles in Kananaskis? It's a great group activity, and there's hundreds of mountains to climb. Nothing better than bagging a peak and drinking all the scenery in, IMO.
That sounds amazingly fun. I wish I had friends that would do things like that, but I'm chinese and my friends are generally un-sporty and don't do many outdoor activities. I was thinking more of an everyday thing somebody could just go and do in the city, in the life of a busy student.

I started hiking by myself one time up a mountain a few years back and ran into a grizzly. That was fun. That whole fall down and play dead thing...well, when you meet a big bear that stuff just doens't stick and you just run. Luckily, I wasn't high up the trail and quickly got back down and across the highway.

One of the cooler places in K-Country is King's Creek, just you have to get past the man-made trails and go really deep into it until you're crossing the river on unsteady stones and sticks, or just wading through, and scrambling everywhere until you reach the meadow.
To me it sounds like you need a new set of friends. You keep saying that you'd love to try some of these suggestions, but your friends are lame and wouldn't want to join you.

Get some new friends and enjoy the city. I truly think that if you can get tired of the attractions in and around Calgary, you'd get tired of whatever city you went to. Calgary just has so much to offer.

I never saw Spruce Meadows mentioned. Did I miss it? It's actually cooler than you might think. I enjoyed it there. 'Course, my daughter seems to like horses.

Another thing I can suggest is the Horse races at Stampede Park. Good times, especially during summer nights.

I don't see why people bitch about rain... Rain=Life.

Because we get out sometimes I suppose.

Sun also = life.
Yeah because under your assumption I don't go out and enjoy the outdoors.... *rollseyes*

Anyhoo, I'm a born and raised Calgarian, it will always be my home town but I enjoy the coastal environment more than the prairies. Rain and all.

You're from Fort MacMurray right Adam? Hell I can see Calgary being the most beautiful city in the world coming from that hole.

Here is the way I see it as far as Western Cities go.

Vancouver>Calgary>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Edmonton.

I consider myself a homer in almost every aspect, but I have to give Vancouver the edge over Calgary in basically every aspect aside from traffic, and sports teams , mind you i've never spent longer than 10 days there.
Funny I felt exactly the same way about Vancouver until I actually did live there for about half a year. There are some great things about the city - the ocean of course being one of them.

But overall it wasn't nearly as cool as I thought it would be. Some reasons:
- The rain is so damn cold. Weeks in a row of that bone chilling rain is really hard to get used too.
- I found the people there to be a little hard to get to know. Not as friendly as Calgary. I realize this is a generalization.
- Traffic. Ugh.
- The Government. Ugh. Ugh.
- ICBC.
- The cost of living. I had a crap basemant apartment in a crap area of town and still couldn't make ends meet.

Not saying it's a bad place....just that its much different to live there then it is to visit.

Well, I lived in Cloverdale (part of Surrey) for four months over a summer, and I gotta say August was absolutely amazing. May and June, however, were brutal. The rain is cold, and you can easily go 2 weeks without seeing the sun. The traffic is awful. They have one-lane highways!! The busiest highway in Western Canada is two lanes wide! It's awful.

And now they're saying the NDP is about to get back into office. Embarrasing.

I'm not going to disagree with you, but its Fort McMurray, not Fort MacMurray. Fort McMurray is a hole.

yeah, I'll agree with that one Adam. I hear you poor bas**rds still only have 3 hockey rinks? All the billions that are made up there and they can't even build some much needed new arenas.....brutal (heck, they needed more ice when I lived up there 10 years ago, I can't imagine the ice times with 20,000 more people there....) Sorry, end of hijack...

I can't understand how anyone could ever be bored in Calgary. So much to do in and around this place. I moved here because of the mountains, and I stil don't get out there as much as I should. Between skiing, hiking, biking, kayaking, etc etc... Lots to do there.

There's live theatre here, the zoo, all the pathways around town, Olympic Oval, museum.

Heck, just go out to Nose Hill Park and look at the whole city, the mountain views....

Lots to do here.

I was born and raised in Calgary until I was 20.

I have been living out in Vancouver for the past 5 years. The first two years here I hated it. The rain, the people, the lack of rockies etc.

But, after making more and more Vancouver friends and finally learning the interesting places to go, this city has got Calgary beat.

There's just so much to do and it isn't dependent on cars, malls, giant bars and really bad art/culture stuff that Calgary has. The restaurants out here are amazing. You can play sports any time of the year. There's hiking a bus ride away. Squamish and Whistler 1.5 hours away. And it has this really nice, quaint urban feel. There are small produce markets everywhere, small specialty shops, ethnic regions all over the city. I live in the Greek area and there's amazing greek food shops and stuff. And oh yeah, there's buses and bike paths everywhere. I have found almost no need for my car since I got out here and bought a bike.

That's just my take. I love Calgary, most specifically the great friendly. But Calgary always feels boring whenever I go back.

some of the things not mentioned:

- Go for mid night skinny dipping in the public pools in calgary,
- or you can go cliff jumping at Seebe, which is always a real adrenaline rush.
- Frizbee Golf is always fun as well
- Hot Springs
- skydiving, a bit pricy, but definaly not boring
- Spruce Meadows in the summer time
- gocart place on the way to Airdire, top notch
- get a megaphone, and go any place with people around (only fun for you, not the other people)
- prank calls
- fishing, lots of good spots close by
- camping
- crazy glue loonies to a sidewalk/hallway floor
- etc, etc, etc

We've rented rafts and canoes from U of C, loaded them up with beer and floated them on the bow through the city. Makes for a pretty fun day, and gives you a much different perspective of the city. You don't even have to paddle if you don't want to!

Lived in Van in 87/88 and it is a great place when the sun is shining but not cheap except flowers and fruit. But after the beautiful summer the winter is dreadful.
Wet, really wet, cold rain and cloudy, just depressing, but as they say in Van if you don't go out when it's raining you might as well not live there.Lot's to do because of the water, sailing and such but I still seemed to leave the city whenever possible to explore Washinton State or the island(s).The same for every city imo.

Calgary is extremely fortunate because we haven't sold access to our river, cleanup on May 15 i think.Lot's of fun.
Buy a dog ,we have more off-leash areas than anywhere in the world.
I didn't see this mentioned but for a nice picnic drive up Crowchild and take any of the roads past Rocky Ridge Rd and explore the amazing houses on your way to the 567 road then watch for Big Hill Springs, beautiful set of waterfalls.

When your heading towards Banff, i believe its the first turnoff after the Fortress/Nakiska turn off. Turn Right (Towards Seebe). About 2 km down take a right again, and follow the road, youll see em on the right.

The cliffs are super cool. You can decide which one you wanna take, anywhere from 10 to good 50-60 feet. Just watch out, the water is pretty chilly, and the current is pretty good as well.

really bad art/culture stuff that Calgary has.
Well we've got the biggest cultural institute this side of Toronto on a budget basis, I don't call that really bad. Plus Vancouver is good if you like the overblown Emily Carr but it's no London or New York otherwise.
I've lived in England and I was pleased to get away from the rain. If Jordon doesn't like the sun and can't put a coat on, fine, but you can't tell me that grey is better than blue. Plus I've been in Van when it's colder in Calgary and hovering just above zero in Van and I've felt freezing far worse than in Calgary.
Oh yeah and people always go on about the rainforest, so frickin' what? lol Ohhh look at the parrots and the mighty pirranahs, the Orangutans....

I lived in Calgary until I was 22 then moved to Vancouver for about 8 years. At first I loved Vancouver except for the sports teams . Then as each year past I liked it less and less. To me the community of Vancouver is not nearly as friendly as Calgary. The last thing I find boring is Calgary even when I lived there in the 80's and early 90's boring would never be a word to describe Calgary. There is always something going on I love Kensington and the downtown area always have. Vancouver has a beautiful scenery with the water and mountains, but the city looks like crap.
