That's more of an acquired taste, but I do love them
There are plenty of relatively tame stuff for Westerners to try if they want some authentic Chinese. Ask for the Chinese menu to see if it has English translations.
Some items that may be worth while to try:
Chicken dishes:
- Crispy chicken with shrimp chips
- Crispy chicken with garlic and soy based sauce
- Steam/salted chicken (warning, may be served cold)
Hot Pots:
- Seafood hot pots
- Beef brisket hot pot (may contain beef tendon, yummy but some may be put off by the texture)
- Something with Tofu in it
Seafood:
- Ask about their live/fresh fish of the day, have it steamed with green onions and ginger (my favourite way to have fish)
- Try Chinese style crab or lobster. It'll be stir fried and cut up and served in your choice of sauce. Lobster goes well with the cream sauce. Crab goes well with ginger and onion, or for spicy, a spicy bake spice
Beef/Pork:
- We eat sweet and sour pork, Peking style beef short ribs as well
Veggie/Tofu:
- Ask what they have in terms of fresh vegetables of the day. Be adventurous and order a chinese vegetable. You have difference options on how they cook it: Stir fried with garlic (the easiest way), stir fried with beef, soup based...etc
- My favourite, snow pea leaves stir fried in garlic ("dow mui" for Cantonese speaking people)
- Steamed tofu with shrimp on top
- Deep fried tofu
- Chinese Mushroom or oyster mushroom dishes
It is always best to go out for authentic Chinese food with 4 or more people so you have the ability to share a few dishes.
