If you signed him this season wouldn't he have to be waived because he is playing in Europe and he's not no the reserve list? Or is that rule gone?

The waiver rule states:
Quote:
13.23 In the event a professional or former professional Player plays in a league outside North
America after the start of the NHL Regular Season, other than on Loan from his Club, he may
thereafter play in the NHL during that Playing Season (including Playoffs) only if he has first
either cleared or been obtained via Waivers. For the balance of the Playing Season, any such
Player who has been obtained via Waivers may be Traded or Loaned only after again clearing
Waivers or through Waiver claim. This section shall not apply to a Player on the Reserve List or
Restricted Free Agent List of an NHL Club with whom the Player is signing an NHL SPC or is
party to an existing SPC with such NHL Club.
|
My understanding is that he wouldn't be considered a professional or former professional player with respect to the CBA because a professional season requires a certain number of NHL Regular Season and Playoff Games, minor league regular season and playoff games, and games played in any European professional league, while under a Standard Player Contract.
The rule is designed to prevent teams from hiding NHL players in Europe and then bringing them in at the deadline for playoffs. Not for new talent.

Only the premium guys get 1-way deals.
if you have to make space because he's earned a spot - nice problem to have.

I remember him bashing the Flames in interviews afterwards for a lack of communication. I think he came to NA with completely unrealistic expectations too ... he probably thought he'd get a shot with the big team early, but he'd have needed a ton of AHL seasoning and he'd still have been a longshot then. Once he realized that, he bailed.

Zuccarello was one out of the SHL
Dominik Kubalik I think out of the Czech league?
Pius Suter
Michael Raffl had a good career.
Erik Gustafsson

If Raffl is on there, then I'd also qualify Raphael Diaz and Pierre-Edouard Bellemare.

He used to be their head coach, but was fired a couple of seasons ago (that's why he was available for the Flames' dads trip this year). He would have coached Sylvegard early in his SHL career.
It looks like Lance Bouma is Sylvegard's teammate in Malmo this season, along with former Stockton Heat players, Carl-Johan Lerby, Adam Ollas Mattsson, and Adam Werner.

Gustafsson and Kubalik were at least drafted though. Carl Hagelin found his way to the NHL years after being drafted.
Zuccarello would be the outlier here for sure. Although he'd be two years younger and more accomplished in the SHL before coming over. Although the level of play there might be better now with the KHL being a bit of a Wild Card right now with imports.

Unlikely any of these guys make a difference.
I wonder if acquiring these Russians might be a play to sign some players out of the khl and hasten our retool.
Pronman has a good list of ufas in ncaa and Europe. If we aren’t getting any love from the us east coasters, maybe the ruskies will fill the gap.

Think you are right:
Quote:
For Players age 20 or older, Professional Games include NHL Games, all minor
league regular season and playoff games and any other professional games, including but not limited to, play in European leagues when Player is on Loan to such club, and while Player isparty to an SPC.

Same. I bought into his hype so much and was constantly in his thread bumping it with his monstrous analytics.
Thought for sure the Flames found a gem lol

Okay, this Sylvegard guy is a bit cray. I like.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=csJ5rbKqQYI
Jumps into the opposing team's bench when a teammate is checked through an open gate. Ends up taking on three or four guys himself. Old time hockey!

Chmelevski wants to come back over after a good khl stint, and wants out of San Jose. In the games I saw two years ago, he was one of the most dangerous sharks offensively, but some defensive questions. Another kuzmenko, only for free?
If they trade Bread off-season, there is a wing spot in the top six, even if Pelletier and coronato play.

25 points in 62 KHL games
Rafikov actually has more career KHL points than does Yakupov.
As a defenseman nearly two years younger, drafted a year later, in the 7th round...

Yeah but did Rafikov do the Fleury after a game tying goal at the beginning of the season?

SJ owns Chmelevski's NHL rights until 2026. SJ would have to trade his rights for him to sign with another team.

How.fast can the Flames sign this guy and bring him over? Put glasses on him, and he's a blond Hanson brother! (The good kind, from Slapshot, not the uh regular blond ones from Hanson)
