I would rather they target a lower resolution with a higher framerate (60/120 fps) and HDR, and if you want 4k you get 30 fps. Looking at the info on the PS5 showcase, that might be close to what's happening at launch.

I'm hoping future PS5 games will have an option that lets you choose either 30fps/high resolution, or 60 or 120 fps/lower resolution. Might mean I can keep my 1080P tv a little longer, but play games in glorious 60 or 120 fps.

They're saying the PS5 SSD is much faster than anything on the market right now, and Sony has been saying they want to essentially remove load times. We'll see if that happens.

There's a good chance you're actually viewing a dynamic resolution well below 4k that's being upscaled for your TV. It's still going to be a good jump and a testament to the upscaler quality that you probably can't tell the difference, though. Very few games actually run at native 4k on a console and it's unfortunate that most people get sold on the idea that they are getting "4k" picture quality.

This is already an option on some PS4 Pro and Xbox One X compatible games. Usually the default is higher resolution and 30 fps locked, or a "performance mode" where the framerate is uncapped and the resolution dropped.

I would hope they use NVMe storage this time around. It isn't really anymore expensive and is much faster.

From the articles I’ve read it might be even better than NVMe. It’s a custom controller that’s way more efficient.

i do find it harder to pick up games right off the bat nowadays; learning new controls schemes is always a challenge
Chances i'll wait for christmas 2021 before picking up a PS 5 as there's still a ton of games i have to play on my PS4, and that's not even including Ghosts of Tsushima and Last of Us 2...
i think Bloodborne is what made me finally buy a PS4

Saw a black PS5. Not sure if legit or a mock-up. Looked great.

Also, I gave my PS4 to my nephews. What should I do? Buy pro now? Wait for ps5?
I do not have 4K tv. But I will eventually. So I don’t want to buy another regular PS4 but I’ll need something. I’m cool with waiting but I also almost never play games day 1 so ps5 almost seems like overkill. But if I’m gonna buy a pro I feel like I should wait until ps5 buyers unload theirs. Then again, if I wait, maybe I should just go all in and buy ps5. Cost isn’t really a factor right now. Except buying pro now and ps5 in November seems wasteful, so money isn’t that much of a non factor.
Thoughts?

It depends on the game. The games I quoted (Battlefield and Destiny 2) both run at a native 4K resolution on Xbox One X, albeit at the expense of only running at 30 frames in Destiny's case. Some games will use a dynamic scaler and you'll notice the resolution drop during intense scenes, but there are a multitude of games out there now whose top-end is a full 4K, and which manage to maintain it more or less throughout. Gears 5 is a steady full 4K, Metro Exodus is a steady 4K (whereas it meets this resolution at something like 40-45% of the time on PS4 Pro).
Resolution-wise, optimization for these consoles has come a long way, so I'm not sure why one would contend that folks with 4K TV's and a game console are simply being sold a bag of goods. Now, frame rate's another discussion and is still where PC holds the obvious high ground (and the area I hope the next gen consoles will most quickly address).

Regardless of what system you're playing on, I'll take 1080p at 60+ FPS over 4k at 30 FPS everytime

Most people sit 10 to 12 feet from their TV. At that distance, on a screen less than 80", your eyes become the lower resolution device. Even at 7 feet from the screen on your 55" you're not close enough to get the full benefit of all those extra pixels. For the way most people set up their living rooms and the size of TV most people have, it's essentially a gimmick.

Regardless, the sheer quality of your OLED is going to make a bigger difference to your viewing experience than the resolution you're looking at.

Doom Eternal runs native 1800p and 60 FPS on Xbox One X....surely the new consoles can set 4k/60 as the standard with HDR.
There is really no point in having games over 60 FPS on a console
Resolution definitely makes a difference if you have eyes

I'm probably going to get the PS5 reluctantly.
Call me old school, but I don't like paying for an online subscription...just to be able to play online.
I'll upgrade my PC when the time comes, and just use the PS5 for single player games better suited for controller, i.e.: AC series.

With PS+ though you get free games every month, sometimes big titles that justify the price by themselves. And there's always sales for PS+ to bring the price down to $50 per year, so at that point I have no problem paying for it. I don't even play anything online with it

I'll go big stretches without playing, so then it feels like such a waste of money.
My PC just sits patiently in it's corner waiting to be played. It doesn't make me pay money to play it or make me feel guilty for not playing it. PS3 was the last great console.
All gamers should unite and just say no to paying for online gaming.

I actually think the PS4 was a much better console than PS3 and I would think Sony would agree. The PS3 was overpriced and underperformed. Microsoft kind of won that generation with the Xbox 360 selling pretty well the same amount worldwide while handedly outselling the PS3 in the most important market (North American).

I mean, I guess so. This "Hey, I've really noticed the difference 4K makes on my TV now" vs. "Nah, you aren't actually seeing any difference there, it's a visual sugar pill" conversation seems to always crop up in topics like this. Contending that 4K on a TV is "effectively" useless because of the distance element seems a bit of a reach if you ask me.
I haven't browsed the stats on average living room size lately, but I'm fully aware of the distance/resolution charts and took them in to account when I was making a TV purchase. Nonetheless, I have thousands of hours of use on two different OLED TV's, and the difference has definitely been there for me. I bounce between PS4 Pro and XB1X all of the time and have often played the same game on both (...not simultaneously). The difference in resolution between the console that renders at a native 4K vs. something like 1440p is rather noticeable (and certainly more so with something like 1080). The maximum benefit's certainly achieved much closer for UHD than HD, but it's absolutely a factor beyond that window as well.

I’ll get a launch mini fridge. I’m too embedded into the ecosystem to change. Games with gold means that I have many games that I want to get to eventually.
I also have the toaster oven.

In general consumers unite and do pay for things they want, hence why they charge for it.
