Nadal lost today which whatever, but he did need to take a medical timeout for his hip, hope it's nothing serious but not a good sign if he's already in pain

The former top 10 player and 2021 Wimbledon semifinalist hasn’t played since last year’s Wimbledon because of injuries, so his ranking has dropped to 109 in the world.
He has been in Auckland for most of this week, practising with other players, including Gael Monfils, in the hope that a spot would open up for him.
When he arrived in the country, his ranking wasn’t high enough to get him into the qualifying draw. However, following a couple of withdrawals the 24-year-old Shapovalov has made it into qualifying.
Classic tournament director Nicolas Lamperin is hoping that he’d be able to give Shapovalov a main draw wildcard, but to do that he needs Gael Monfils to make it into the main draw by his own ranking, which is 74 in the world.

Monfils is now in as there are no special entries but they gave his wildcard to Gasquet. Now a withdrawal will put Gasquet in. There is also another wildcard left, not sure who they are saving it for.

I watched some highlights of the match earlier today and Rafa let three match points in set 2 slip away. Based on the match footage I did watch, Thompson played a whale of a match.

Looks like Shapo got his wild card after all (he was scheduled to play Muller)

The Brisbane final is set for later tonight with Holger Rune taking on Grigor Dimitrov. That's a darn good final to kick off 2024.

Yeah, that news really sucks. My fear is that we are near the end, the spirit is willing, but the body continues to let him down.

It's starting to feel like Nadal will play French Open and Olympics and then call it a career. His body held up much longer than anyone thought, and I got to watch him win 22 Slams but man I'm not ready for tennis without Nadal

With some withdrawals over the last few days, Leylah has received the 32nd and last seed for the Aussie Open. That's the good news. The bad news is that Leylah has withdrawn from the WTA 500 event in Adelaide this week. Not sure if she just decided to take a breather and rest up for the Aussie Open or if she has an injury concern.

The ATP putting Zverev on the Player's Council is just so on brand for a tour that doesn't care about domestic abuse.

Sadly I can't see any situation where he is physically able to make it through 5-6 matches in a 7-10 day span at a 1000 level event, let alone 7 five setters needed to win a major.

Aussie Open qualifying has started and Carol Zhao won her opening round match. Stacey Fung lost hers, however. Rebecca Marino and Katherine Sebov play later tonight.

Dang Shapovalov looks absolutely terrible against Ofner in Auckland.

Ofner had a pretty good 2023 and made the semi-finals last week in Hong Kong last week (up to #36 in the live rankings). Not surprised Denis lost, but yeah from what I watched, Shapo has plenty of rust to shake off.
