I keep reading the thread title as "Facebook outrage". The thread still delivered appropriately even with my mistake.
I feel bad for IT guys world wide likely being being unfairly criticized for blocking Facebook usage on their networks.

First Line Centre
|
A reddit user by the name of u/ramenporn deleted their account shortly after making statements that he was on the recovery team and believed the outage was an impact of a configuration change to BGP peering routers, even attributing the challenges to low staffing at the data center due to covid. Worse is that the people who have physical access to the servers are not the same as the ones with actual knowledge on what to do.
Basically he was giving out very confidential private info, the media got wind of it, and got nuked.

Wouldn’t it be nice if they just never came back?

Looks like not everything has been restored. I can't view my photos, or anyone else's for that matter. For some friends I can't view their posting history either.
Likely stuff was turned off to alleviate flood of traffic once people realized their lives were no longer on hold.

It sounds like the outage affected all of the access control at the Facebook campuses, so no one could get in to any room in the building.
Apparently they had to take an angle grinder to the lock in order to get to the server cage.

LOL. Nothing like not having a physical backup to access.

Guys switch to Signal. It's way better that Whatsapp and Zuckerberg can't read your messages.

I tried to get people to do that years ago, but nobody was interested. I was the only on on there that I knew. WhatsApp was too entrenched.

Gonna take a few more outages.

Signal and Telegram, two private messenger apps, saw downloads and user sign-ups soar during the extended downtime of Facebook Inc.’s network of apps and services.
Millions of new users joined the Edward Snowden-endorsed Signal on Monday, it said on Twitter. Telegram, whose functionality closely mirrors that of WhatsApp, surged 55 places to top the U.S. iPhone download chart, according to Sensor Tower.

Krebs on Security said whatever updated they did locked them out from reverting the changes remotely once they realized there was an issue, and the local guys on site didn't have access to physically get in there and do something.
Everyone is assuming their access control system would have shut them out, but their setup has got to be pretty mind blowningly stupid if that is the case.
Any competent organization has battery backup systems in place that JUST run access control, and some keys locked up in a safe in a couple locations nearby. Like a safety deposit box at the bank down the street.

They probably thought it was pretty wiz-bang to have it all in the cloud, accessible from anywhere, and no one thought "what if that goes down? What if the server controlling security, that's behind this locked door, is down?" Having a physical key is a security risk, because entrance can't be logged to a persons access card. It's obviously a bad decision as they've shown, but I'd imagine that's some of the logic at play.

I dunno, when it comes to backups everyone should follow the 3-2-1 system, so the lack of proper access control 'backups' is honestly pretty dumb.
But yes, the newer access control systems are all 'cloud' controlled with the latest in fancy alert technology and the easiest possible management settings.
Until your cloud goes down and you're up ##### creek.
That is why we have physical keys as backup.
