You won’t miss a ton if you skip practice. We only get FP2 anyways on tsn.
You may see cars do some long runs and race simulations to give us a general idea of the pace but top teams are notorious for sandbagging, not wanting to reveal their true speed.

If you're new to F1/racing I'd still try and catch FP2. Cecil is right in that teams arent pushing the pace, more of a shakedown / test new aero packages / data gathering.
I find the TV guys tend to talk a lot more about the tech / new packages / drivers / teams etc. vs qualifying + race day. At least I feel they do...lol. I tend to think of it as the 30min pregame BS session before a Flames game.
I usually tape whatever TSN carries for each race and then watch it all and ffwd the stuff I know about.

Probably a bit of bias in wanting a Canadian to do well. But yeah mostly just getting away from that trash heap of a team.

Should we do predictions in this thread for each race? Maybe top 3, top 5?

Love it...but maybe top 10/12? Top 6 are usually pretty set...but I'm just excited for the Renault/Haas/McLaren/AR/RP battles.
I'll take a crack, pre-FP1 :-). Top 12 Finishing order, with Verstappen + Magnussen being the obvious choices to crash out:
Vettel / Hamilton / Bottas / Leclerc / Verstappen / Ricciardo / Gasly / Hulkenberg / Raikkonen / Magnussen / Sainz / Giovinazzi
And heads up that FP2 is on TSN2 @ 1045pm tonight

I'll add more later, as I'm more of a beginner than most.
1. Verstappen
2. Hamilton
3. Ricciardo (wishful thinking of a screw you podium finish in his home country)
4. Vettel
5. Leclerc
6. Gasly
12. Stroll (not likely but hoping!)

For full disclosure I’ve already seen the FP1 results, not that they mean much.
1 Vettel
2 Hamilton
3 Leclerc
4 Verstappen
5 Raikkonen
Bottas has a bad time and gets knocked out in turn 1. Stroll beats Perez. Alfa Romeo surprises and both cars score points. Renault struggles.

Is anyone else surprised that DiResta never got another drive?

At present the gap between 3-16 is 1s. That’s not bad.
Merc pace has to be deceiving, right?

Is Williams really that bad? Was looking forward to seeing how Kubica does in his return to F1.

I'd read that Merc was going with a new/update aero package as a result of the Barcelona testing, but my god, yeah that 0.8s gap to P2 is huge.
I havent watched FP2 yet...but really looking good for Alfa if those paces are close to "real". I'd have to image that Ferrari pulls even with Merc today and gaps Red Bull a little bit. But looking at Toro Rosso maybe Honda really has found a better engine since they look strong as well (0.1s back of Haas).
And lol @ Williams...I used to love them, but they're bordering on being a caricature. 3.9s back in top lap performance. I was looking forward to Kubica as well...

Did people want to keep track of our predictions? Could track it over the season with points something like...pick the top 10 by Friday. Correct position answers get the same pts as the drivers (25 - 1st, 18 - 2nd etc)? Do our own constructors championship, lol.

I fully believe Ferrari was sandbagging, same with Red Bull.

Cool...I'll update the tracker in the original post with new entries and if GWE + Jays add more predictions (KelV? etc). Maybe do a cutoff for future races of Saturday noon Calgary time. Most races happen over early Sunday morning.
Now I've got to remember to keep on top of this, lol.
