Funny thing is Berube was fed up with guys like Thomas and Kyrou. You’re getting the same thing with Marner and Nylander and to an extent Matthew’s.

Not sure what he’s supposed to do with Simon Benoit and Morgan Reilly as his top pairing.
This firing isn't really a Treliving thing IMO.

He came in and the guys above him wanted to keep Keefe and they didn't want him as a lame duck so he got an extension.

For the Leafs management is the one area they can still spend to have a competitive advantage so don't think the salary for Keefe really even matters to them.

Keefe won a round which saved his job last season but I actually don't really see anything that speaks to him being a remarkable coach. The team relys on talent solely to win in the regular season, then when the things get tighter in the playoffs they consistently don't seem to have an answer. Coaching is part of that.

Berube doesn't like that Thomas and Kyrou are bad defensively, for strong offensive forwards all of Matthews, Marner, and Nylander are actually quite responsible defensively. A better coach would get more out of those three IMO. Tavares and Rielly are the guys that I don't think Berube is going to love. (If he ends up being the coach)

Let's see, what would be the funniest/sickest? Woodcroft? Quennville? Peters? The return of Babcock?

Keefe gets it, it's part of the business. It sucks to get fired, but you can't waste time being bitter about it. I do think he is probably a decent coach and he will land another NHL HC job again.

He won’t get the job, but if I needed to get absolutely everything out of this Leafs core in the next 2-3 years, I’d be hiring Darryl.

Tortorella. He'll coach both the Flyers and the Leafs next season.

Not a huge fan of Keefe, but I don't think he was bad.

5th all time for wins for the Leafs? That seems nuts.

We know why it was only Reirden fired. Opening up the assistant's slot so Sullivan can train his replacement.

I agree with the sentiment that this wasn't exactly a coaching issue, however Keefe got out coached in every single play-off series he was Head Coach for in the NHL, even the series he won.

Now other than one instance he wasn't going up against novices or below average coaches. He was tasked with Jon Cooper, John Montgomery, Paul Maurice and Bruce Cassidy for most of those. But the series loss to Montreal and Dominic Ducharme is painful. Torts and the Blue Jackets wasn't great either. The major thing with the first four coaches is they are ALL divisional coaches. That he was regularly meeting them in the first round really hammers home the fact he could never get his team over the hump either in the play-offs or the regular season.

I don't think Berube alone fixes all the issues, but I think there is less concern about the coach making a mistake than there was.

Oh I agree - I don’t think he’d go east and I don’t think he’d work with Treliving again, but he’s about the only person I would put into that job who I wouldn’t Expect to fail.

Man gets results.

Darryl would be Babcock 2.0. he can't work in that fishbowl today, not with gen z IMO. Stories like this https://theathletic.com/4614335/2023...shared_article of him hitting a player on the bench in 2022 would not just pass by with minimal notice.

According to wikipedia Martin St. Louis is now the 5th longest tenured active coach in the NHL.

The Toronto Maple Leafs’ Gen Z stars inability to handle a curmudgeon behind the bench is at least part of the reason why they get wrecked in the first round every year.

Bunch of entitled children.

Not really considering the market he is in and the team he inherited, not sure he is in charge either

Sutter - some unfinished business with some of those former Flames

Sheesh, didn't expect that firing! Is more like Treliving not willing to give up assets to get the goalie and d-men they need for depth. Guess he needed to blame the coach for the 1st round exit. LOL
