It would be great if the NHL's All-Time Top Goal Scorer was a Russian.
The Parade in Red Square would be legendary!

I think it's there if he wants it bad enough.
The real question is "Will Ovechkin stick around around he gets it?"
If he is willing to play until 41-42 he has it in the bag easily.
If he wants to go back to Russia at 38 then he won't make it.

If the NHL starts up again for the 2020-21 season, in reality he only missed about a dozen games. Who knows, maybe the extended break helps him come back strong in his 35 year old season.
The big tragedy here is that he will miss out on a historic 9th 50 goal season. Only two away. That really sucks as a fan of Ovi.

Record or not, he's still the greatest goal scorer ever imo. He actually had to put those numbers up against professional goalies.

Between Covid and a couple lockouts, it's a freakin' miracle that he is even in the conversation of breaking the record, let alone having a shot at it.
I thought that even with the couple lockouts he would still have a chance to break the record. But IMO Covid really puts a damper on that. Those couple extra goals will likely make the difference. Not to mention the mentality of having momentum on his side.
If by some miracle he DOES break the record, I don't see how this could not possibly be one of the greatest record breaking achievements in all of sports given the adversity.
Either way I still think he's the greatest goal scorer of all time. Would just be nicer to see his name at the very top!

I'd care less if Ovechkin does break the one only the record of many records that Gretzky holds. Gretzky, while becoming the Great One, also made others great alongside him, whereas Ovechkin only made himself look good. Try getting a 200_ point season and sharing that glory with others. The goalies in those eras were actually pretty awesome even though their GAA were around 3.45 or higher for guys like Grant Fuhr.

Well, that's ridiculous. Sure, Ovechkin is not Wayne Gretzky, because who the hell is or ever will be as impactful like that again in our lifetimes? But it is disingenuous to say Ovechkin has not affected his teammates in a similarly positive way.
Players who play with the best goal-scorer of all time benefit from it. It's as simple as that.

Anyone watching videos from those eras can see that most of those goalies were cartoons.

I rewatched a couple games from one of the "greatest" SCFs ever. 1984 Oilers vs Islanders.
Two things stood out to me that were actually jarring: the goalies suck so damn bad, and the amount of lollygagging on the ice. It looked like a public skate! The only guy trying was the guy with the puck and the guy hooking him.

If the next season is canceled or half is missed, he will be really hard pressed to make it, and I wonder if the not playing will slow him down to. Like others have said it is a different era but I wonder if Mike Bossy had been healthy, how many he would have got.

GOAT!

The real tragedy is how this affects Marleau's run at the most NHL games played record.
Edit: I mean... aside from actual tragedies, etc.

If Ovechkin keeps up his current 2 goal per game pace he'll pass Gretzky in game 82.
Surpassed Dionne for 5th all time with 732 (in 1198 games).
Next up = Brett Hull - 741 in 1269.
A 37 goal season will take him past Jagr's 766 (in 1733)

Someone on Reddit the other day was comparing McDavid and Crosby’s first six season and their point totals.
Then someone was like um, Ovi had 614 points vs McDavids 574.
He doesn’t get the respect he always deserves actually.

Because he’s Russian, and because Sportsnet has a really weird thing for McDavid. Like, very, very weird.

It is absolutely criminal that this man had 2 lockouts and COVID to contend with in seeking the goal scoring record. Greatest goal scorer of all time. He has scored numerous goals that will never be forgotten.
His one timer isn't really a skill that will dissipate, and that alone should see him in the league as a PP player for as long as he wants.

Ovechkin is GOAT scorer. Anyone who believes otherwise should be treated the same as Anti-vaxxers.
