I think Candy was already struggling mightily during the filming of Cool Runnings. He was like 4 hours late for the morning shoot. Very apologetic, but I'd imagine you don't typically leave a few hundred people waiting without having some major issues you're dealing with.
I can't believe he was only in his early 40s. This is the first notable death in my life that I remember thinking about when I heard it on the playground.
I love Cool Runnings. Its everything. Its Calgary, its John Candy its the Jamaicans, my mom was an extra, and as a kid I competed in Luge and Bobsled so I've done that run.
My mom and Aunt used to volunteer at COP so I've seen it all, I've been to the top of the Ski-Jump (I did not go down it), I competed in downhill skiing for years but I'm not insane, I never went off the Jump.
What a great movie.
I will always remember chatting with one of my old accounting Professors, he was from Ghana and the U of C convinced him to come and teach here, but they courted him in June and he showed up in December to "What. The. Fata??"
And I told him to watch that movie.
"You people are insane."
The professor you're talking about, is it Abu?
"Peanut butter costing!!!" and for that December story you're talking about, there's also the later part where he says he quickly tries to run in between buildings and ends up staring that the sky after slipping on ice.
Funny. I remember telling him to watch Cool Runnings as well. He responded that many people had told him to watch that movie over many years but he hadn't gotten around to watching it yet.

Abu! He was awesome! One of my favourite Profs! Its rare that you meet an Accounting Prof with a sense of humour but Abu was great!

My aunt was neighbour and good friends of the Candys north of Toronto.
I've met John's kids and widow and my cousin's wedding.
I found out only years later that John was going to make a surprise appearance at my birthday party when he was in Calgary shooting Cool Runnings, but filming overran and he couldn't make it.
How cool would it have been to have Uncle Buck turn up at your birthday party as a kid?
Even though I never met him, he was so kind and generous that my aunt would send stuff out west that she got from him to share with our family. I still have the Argos bomber jacket he donated, and, when I was really young, I got an Armed and Dangerous frisbee lol.
