Even though I'm pretty disappointed in what they showed I'll still play the hell out of it and add a ton of mods. Hopefully they add some really cool and new gameplay element.
In Fallout 3 they added VATS. It was unique and very cool to play with, the best part of the game in my opinion. Ideally they add some new gameplay elements that are unique to the game.

A more bleak and depressing start with a more hopeful outcome.

Which is fine and all, but it's not a Fallout game. The whole point of Fallout was its atmosphere, juxtaposing utter ruin and horror with a sarcastic, funny, faux-50s-"this is what silly people 40+ years ago might think a nuclear apocalypse would have looked like" tone to it. It was fun, and still managed to have all the intensity needed to provide for consequences that felt real.
Fallout 3 was just a totally different post apocalyptic game. It only bore resemblance to F1 and F2 in so far as it ostensibly took place in the same world (there's still a BOS and an Enclave and Super Mutants and Deathclaws). But those similarities were extremely shallow and were often a stretch; playing that game often felt like watching Phantom Menace and AOTC where they tried to shoehorn in as many references to the original Star Wars trilogy as possible. Beyond that shallow similarity, "Elder Scrolls with guns" continues to be the best descriptor of that game. Which, if you like Elder Scrolls games (which I played as a kid too, had well over 100 hours into Daggerfall which was easy to do) you're just fine with. But for people who loved the originals, the reboot felt like being cheated. Could have been much more.

I disagree. The post-1950's apocalytica was captured perfectly for atmospheric effect in Fallout 3. The only thing I would say was missing was the cheeky humor on a broad and consistent level; it was a bit too serious at times, but some elements were humorous (nothing beats Fallout 1 and 2 for that, though!)
VATS better be in this game too. Extremely important element to Fallout 3 that should not be looked over. Also, I'm hoping the Pip Boy will have awesome new features.

The only reason I ever used VATS was because of the terrible gun control. If you could aim properly I wouldn't ever use it.

VATS was way more useful in Fallout 3 - you were less likely to take damage and unless you modded to add iron sights, aiming was more difficult. In New Vegas, I would only ever use it sparingly, as I could whip out my Cowboy Repeater and shoot down the sight with ease. You also took more damage in VATS in New Vegas.

VATS was basically a cheat code, from my memory.

Gun control was fine. Unlike games like Halo or COD though, Fallout had no aim assist on console. It's probably why you thought it was terrible.
Guns would also lose accuracy depending on its damage.
It's just part of what made the game fun.

According the the former Bethesda employee on Reddit (who doesn't understand the concept of NDA's) it will be released this year with plenty of DLC before Christmas.

Look man, it's okay to be skeptical, but come on, can we try to be a bit optimistic?
When do normal pre-order sales pop up? Is it common to be a year in advance with major titles like this?
