I suspect the current helmet sponsors of most teams will have first crack at it and will pay top dollar to make sure they have a matching set. For teams that have home & away helmet sponsors, maybe the same deal for jerseys?

The NBA seems to have a good job with this, from what I've seen.
It would certainly suck if the Flames finally got rid of the blue flag on their shoulders only to sign on Shaw, Telus, or WestJet as the jersey sponsor and put their blue/purple/green logo on display.

To be honest I'd prefer the 1 big logo on the chest (like euro soccer) than patches all over the jersey (like euro hockey).
If this means they don't need to jack up ticket prices (as much) annually, then sure.

This is interesting... Swedish club Brynäs IF.

On 3 June 2014, the club also signed a five-year contract with Gävle Municipality (expiring after the 2018–19 season). The municipality acquired the naming rights for the club's home arena and renamed it Gavlerinken Arena.[3] The latter collaboration also meant the municipality would pay the club to play with ad-free jerseys, starting in the 2014–15 season, as the only SHL team.[4]

Maybe the City of Calgary can sponsor the Flames?

If Alberta sponsors the Flames we could throw an Alberta flag on the jerseys. That’d look cool. Someone want to mock that up?

I believe you are correct. My hope is that the helmet ad is gone once the jersey ad is adopted.

LOL. It just means they get more money. Extra cash doesn't go to reducing ticket costs. If they wanted cheaper tickets, everyone would take less money. They fill arenas, so there is no incentive. This is about extracting the maximum amount of money form everything.
Personally, I think it's stupid and ugly and I'm done with having ads thrown at me from every angle so the owners and teams can make a little bit more, while going to games is becoming accessible, and the TV experience is endless ads in your face. Kinda done with it.

Yeah, really cheapens the brand IMO. But as long as they don't allow colour contrasts (like a blue logo on a Flames uniform) I'll learn to live with it. They really have to fix some of these silly helmet ads.

Looks decent on the jersey, I can live with that as long as they don't over do it like the KHL or any of the other EURO leagues. Still hate it through.

Coach during intermission: You don't play for the name on the back, you play for the crest on the front! You think Caesars Sportsbook spent all that money for you to lose? You get out there and give it your all damn it, and don't let them down!

Honestly, when watching the game in person you'd never see it. On TV, only see it with some specific shots. Kind of seems pointless for a company to spend on an ad that size, so not as big a deal as I thought it could be.

I never understood the utility of advertising at sporting events. How many people actually gravitate towards a product based on an ad? And if they are, how do those companies track how many?

It’s psychological. For massive companies like these it’s more about repetition than anything else. Subconsciously people become more and more familiar and comfortable with a brand the more they see it.
Nobody sees a CIBC ad and decides to go open a line of credit, but when that time comes CIBC could be top of mind due to repetition of seeing the logo whether people recognize why or not.
It’s the same reason the McDonald’s, Coke’s, and Amazon’s of the world continue to pump money into marketing despite being as big as they can possibly get.
