Guy figured he could make more playing at home than being stuck in the A. One of the options Russian players have over other Europeans, though there are exceptions.

The Flames current top prospect was taken with a 7th rounder.

I certainly don't have my "panties in a bunch" over losing a 5th rounder, but the fact that's hard to unearth players in the draft is the reason we need to accumulate picks and not distribute them. More chances at striking gold.

Conroy has done a great job of this so far, as this is the only pick his moved to date.

Back in 2007 we had a defenceman go play in Russia, that turned out OK.

The Flames didn't lose a 5th rounder. They have a 23-year old defensive prospect with 67 NHL games played, who is developing overseas for at least 2 years.

He was developing for the Flames, I think the Flames would have liked to have in our own system and not being a flight risk of never coming back.

It's completely accurate, and a hilarious way to spin it.

I guess we'll find out in two years if he comes back, or if we even want him to.

More realistically both the pick and player are gone.

If in two years he comes back guns a blazing go ahead and dunk on me then.

Well that assumes the Flames will qualify him, I could definitely see the Flames not qualifying the player

I assume that the Flames do qualify him. What is the downside? He has some nice tools, so if he develops over the next couple of years, the Flames will still own his rights and will either bring him back or trade his rights.

Dreger reported that the Flames intend to qualify him and retaining his rights.

Player might show zero interest returning to NHL,

i.e. likely in the exit interviews, player stated he was going over seas.

Two NHL roster players in 24 years.

An 8.3% success rate.

This Russian dude was a far better gamble than whoever they might have drafted.

Sure, but you still qualify him. He may change his mind down the road. Again, what would be the downside to qualifying him?

First Brady Lyle, now Nikita Okhotiuk...

Sad, sad day for the franchise.

The kid was probably told he needs more time working on his skills and he wouldn’t likely start in the NHL next year unless he blew their socks off at camp. Not a big deal for him to choose the KHL and not a lost asset at all yet if they qualify him.

It’s not at all like the trade was a third for Bollig and his dumb remaining three year contract.

Nikita Nesterov was named KHL Defender of the Year.

Another one that got away!

Remember when Gio went to play in the KHL.

That turned out sooo bad.
