One thing I think Feaster should get credit for is identifying Giordano as an untouchable when we unloaded the old boy's club.
Also, bringing in key vets like Hudler and Wideman, while still looking toward the future.
Having good vets really fast-tracked the rebuild. Would Monahan and Gaudreau have the numbers they do without Jiri Hudler?

Feaster did a ton of heavy lifting in his time as GM. We were a "post-apex" team that was maxed to the cap. To get from where we were to where we are now as quickly as we did, says a lot about the work that he did.

Feaster no doubt has a lot to do with the success of this team. So great job.
This could have went sour for him as he tried to get brad Richards in the offseason, and that Ryan o'rielly situation could have been the worst thing to happen, as I believe they would have lost the pick that was eventually monahan.
All in all he cards fell in place....go flames!

This is all thanks to finally realizing that sitting with old guard would never work, and that Darryl's idea was flawed, and forcing Jay to follow that vision was the wrong move as well.
Once they allowed Jay to tear it down we can see how drafting and building is the only way to get it done.
|
Giordano, Backlund, Bouma, Brodie, Stajan, Ortio and Ferland were all brought into the organization under Darryl's watch; they clearly had a large impact on this seasons team.
Why do so many "fans" feel the need to crap on ex-players, coaches and GM's as soon as they leave the organization?
Darryl saved this franchise in 2003, and he should always be remembered as one of the best people ever associated with the franchise.

Darryl both saved and consequently ruined the franchise when he lost his mind in the Phaneuf and Jokenin trades.

Agree.
When it is all said and done Feaster (and Darryl) will have their fingerprints all over this team, and they deserve credit for some of their pick ups and the draft picks that have us here today.
Especially Feaster since the core of this team is players he drafted or acquired.
However I still don't feel like the decision to move on was the wrong move, I view it as necessary progression to get to where we are today.
We needed to take that next step to make sure we were building that winning culture around our team.
Deserved or not Feaster had a poor reputation around hockey circles, and that lead to the team being the brunt of jokes, and having a poor reputation (especially after the Ryan O'Reilly debacle and issues with the Iginla trade).
Hiring Burke, and subsequently bringing in Treliving, brought some respect and legitimacy to the organization which IMO has helped them turn it around over the last 18 months.
In the end this is not going to be one GM's "Team", which if you look at how this team actually plays and is built, makes all the sense in the world.

Meh. He was also ready to plunge us back into it with the Richards offer.
To get us out of cap jail he dealt Regehr and gave up a 2nd in the deal. Surely getting rid of Sarich who made slightly less would've actually been the better deal. Some rumours there was more to the decision to deal Regehr but frankly that might've been a better time to move Iginla than when Feaster ultimately ended up doing so. Of course ownership may not have been on board with dealing Iginla until that last possible timeframe.
Feaster's UFA moves turned out really good (Hudler, Wideman.)
His cap contributions are overrated, dealing Regehr and a 2nd when Kotalik left back to europe next fall anyway was terrible value.
He let his scouts draft, I guess you can give him a bit of credit there.
But he wasn't intellectually honest enough early enough in his tenure to see that the Flames needed to be rebuilt to be a contender.
I don't think he got amazing value for Iginla and Bouwmeester.
Feaster's best trade was probably for Russell.
Ultimately Tod Button and his staff may deserve the most credit of anyone for finding gems like Gaudreau, Brodie, Bouma, Giordano (undrafted UFA), Backlund, Monahan, Ferland, Granlund, Jooris, Poirier, Ortio, etc.
Feaster deserves some credit. But he did a lot of meh while he was here and misjudged his team a fair amount. I think our future is bright mostly because of our scouting.

The core of this team belongs to Jay. The depth at forward is thanks to Jay. The Gaudreau pick is thanks to Jay (let's face it: Button has made a lot of recommendations which have been ignored over the years).
Credit where credit is due.

Button has made recommendations that have been ignored? Where is the proof of this? Also Jay has nothing to do with the draft so I do not credit him for Monahan, Gaudreau, Granlund, etc. And the point of my post is that other people deserve credit as well. This isn't Jay's team by any stretch. A lot of people deserve credit. This team is not where it is without the contributions of a lot of people.
Credit where credit is due.

Credit for Monahan?mHe tried to trade that pick.
Doing the heavy lifting in regards to moving Iginla and Bouwmeester? Iginla forced a trade and the Bouwmeester trade was ill-time for a poor return.
If Feaster had his way this team would be paying Brad Richards 6.9 million dollars for the next 7 years to center Iginla and Tanguay. Blake Comeau and Anton Babchuk would be finishing up their multi year deals.

Let's be fair - when the Jokinen deal happened, it was pretty much UNIVERSALLY endorsed (pundits and fans (yes, always an exception or 2)).
It didn't work out at all, but that was a surprise as everyone thought Iggy finally had his centre.
Phaneuf - I'm not going to argue that one.
