We drove back from Vancouver via Kelowna on the weekend, it's very surreal seeing everything we drove past engulfed in flames like that. My wife even asked me if I would be interesting in moving back to the area since I work remotely (dad still lives in Lumby), and I told her no, with wildfires being one of the top reasons. I'm thinking she'll understand a bit more after seeing these photos

a couple shots from my deck...

this was around dinner time. 'bridge hill' (which is where hwy97 approaches okanagan lake bridge) can be seen mid-centre/right. as the night went on there was only vehicles fleeing west kelowna. the only 'tail lights' going up bridge hill were more fire trucks that were responding from all over (joe rich, winfield, ellison, lumby, armstrong, etc.)
Spoiler!

it's pretty windy this morning and on the news they said the wind is supposed to shift later today. it's been blowing from the south-west (pushing the westside fire north). the winds are supposed to start blowing from the north, which could push the fire a lot closer/into west kelowna - i have a feeling it's going to be a long day.

hoping everyone in these affected areas stays safe!
Jesus that's nuts.

These fires suck, but so do you!

Stay safe

Friends and family in Kelowna, plan was to drive there Monday for a few days. Might not be the best time to do that. Not sure I can recall the Kelowna airport being shut down like that before?

Wind shifted in Kelowna sounds like. Now it looks like blade runner 2049. Valley choking on smoke.

Apparently KGH called a code orange (mass casualties) but it was just a nurse on Twitter. Not sure the reasoning. There was also a car hit by a train earlier so maybe that's it. It's ugly there

My good friend's two daughters live in Kelowna on the East side. They are both nurses. She did say this morning that her daughter mentioned the wind changed early this morning.

They are getting patients in the hospital now from Yellowknife.

I lived in quail ridge, right on the backside. Seeing much of my old stomping grounds burning down has me unexpectedly emotional.

yea - the winds were forecasted to shift shift between noon and 1. it was probably 12:20-12:30 you could see the smoke starting to blow back south and not north.

it's pretty nasty outside right now... unless you have a thing for the smell of campfire

another friend just got "the door knock" from the rcmp to get out.

i'm wondering about ubco - i heard on the scanner that the fire was coming down thru the north glenmore dog park and heading into the dump... there is one 'mountain ridge' between the dump and ubco

I'm leaving, my office is near the University which has been ordered to evacuate. The hospital went code orange. Today has gone about as bad as it could have

Just got off the horn with one of my life long buddies....hes pretty sure their place got wiped out overnight.

He was able to hook up his trailer and get to safer territory last night but is going to head to Calgary tonight.

Just brutal for everyone involved.

Update from Adams Lake.
Aggressive fire behavior across the lake from our site.
Road access was still good, so we got our concrete poured. I've been sitting here all morning waiting to know that all the trucks and pumper got out safe. Glad our team pulled this one off with no issues.
It's a scary time out here right now, and my little construction dramas are obviously quite irrelevant to the big picture.
My business partner's cousin lost his home in West Kelowna last night.

We carry on.
Best of luck to everyone.

Did the fire from the West side somehow ignite the East fire? Or did they start separately?

Fire jumped the lake. Hot embers can travel a long way with the wind and start separate fires kilometers away from the main one
