Community or Public lakes?
http://www.albertaregulations.ca/fis...-stocking.html
The following list of lakes, reservoirs and ponds identifies sites that are frequently stocked with rainbow trout, and some with brook trout, brown trout or cutthroat trout. Water bodies appearing below are open all year with a trout limit of five. The harvest of game fish species other than trout from stocked trout waters is not permitted. Stocked waters where the harvest of other species is allowed or where bait restrictions apply are listed under "Lakes and Streams Listings" for each Watershed Unit.
Several additional sites stocked with rainbow, brook, brown, cutthroat trout or arctic grayling are not identified in this section, but appear with special regulations under "Lake and Stream Listing" for each Watershed Unit.

I was in Montana this weekend fishing the might Mo'. Amazing weather and just a brilliant couple of days! Caught some nice Rainbows, Browns and much to the guides delight (sarcasm) a few big Whitefish! If you flyfish and you've never done it I would highly encourage you to make the trek. Here was a decent Brown I caught on a dry:

Not from this year but this is my best catch ever. 21 lb Pike @ Sylvan Lake in the late winter of 2008.

What did that one weigh in at?
Probably caught over by the outflows from the power plants? (Just an educated guess). Better mounted than eaten, when these things get this big

Was in Florida for a hockey tourney and my buddy (lucky F#@%@#) hooked this 10' 400lb hammerhead. Was just an awesome fish we released back in to the wild. Super fun.

Bump.
I just finished my introductory fly fishing course through a local shop, and can definitely see myself getting into the sport. Any advice on gearing up?
The two trains of though to get started are to either A) pick up a budget outfit (sub-$200) and upgrade at some point if/when I outgrow the equipment, or B) set a budget (say 350-500) and work with the shop to find a good match for gear that I can grow into over the next few year.
I'm in NW Calgary, and would like easy access to practice casting during the evenings - any recommendations besides my backyard? The Bow seems intimidating for a beginner, but it's a pretty short drive to Bowness/Montgomery to get into live water.

I've said before that you don't need fancy equipment to catch trout. I wouldn't tie my wagon to a fly-shop - they are experts at removing $ from your wallet.
What you need depends on your goals. If you plan to fish small streams in the Eastern Slopes, you don't need a heavy rod. I use a four piece which is very portable for hiking. You won't need a fancy reel as you will be playing most fish by hand.
If it is warm, I often just go in shorts and water shoes. I would invest in a decent vest and net.
I recommend breathable waders (any other kind are too hot for walking around) and wading boots.
You could get your waders here (and save):

A quick look at local fly-shop websites shows they don't list products and prices. That should be a red flag.
Small streams near Calgary - Jumpingpound Creek, Dogpound Creek, Elbow River (upstream from Calgary)

I suck at trout fishing, but it doesn't stop me from trying. Few weeks ago the wife and I went up to a local park that has a lot of stocked lakes, the browns were crushing flys on the surface but didn't want any part of my spinning gear. Going to have to get into fly fishing I think.
I spent some time this spring outfitting my canoe.. last summer I was upset that I never had anywhere to put my drink. It always just got spilled on the bottom of the boat, so I said alright next summer I will have drink holders. Then I thought well... what if I put in rod holders to, and nicer seats.. and a fish finder.. hrmm better make it stable so I can stand up for the big fights.. and maybe lets throw a motor on it, paddling is over rated. After the dust settled and it was all said and done, I forgot the drink holders.

I totally agree with what you say here. Just this spring though I ditched the vest and went with what I would describe as a fanny pack. I think that I like it better, and will really like it on those really hot days, but I guess time will tell.
I definitely agree that you don't need super fancy and expensive stuff though. Same goes for when you're buying flies...as long as it looks good to the fish it makes no difference whether you took it out of the bargain bin or paid $4.

Anyone have any good tips for places within an hour of Calgary (preferably out the west end) to give my new rod a try??. I got my first Alberta license in 15 years today (just recently moved back)!! We used to go out to jumping pound and upper kananaskis with some luck using marshmallows. Any other places/successful bait?

There are a couple of little lakes near Exshaw - Gap Lake is one.
Wedge Pond around Nakiska has grayling.
Allen Bill pond west of Bragg Creek got destroyed by the flood, and I don't know if it was restored.
People tell me they have good luck just below the dam at Glenmore.
