I like Martinez as a player, but I can't think of many players in the league that would make less sense to add.

He plays the right side...
Giordano - Martinez
Brodie - Hamonic
Hanifin - Andersson
Stone
If acquired, someone definitely needs to go, because these guys will eventually be regulars as soon as next season.
Välimäki - Kylington
Lerby - Yelesin

Or put Kylington up and Martinez back.

Martinez would be the perfect target. Depleted Blueline. Martinez can play both sides, he plays in every situation, hehe is a real steadying influence, he has a couple Cup rings.
He basically would replace Hamonic going into next season.
This teams defense has been pretty bad even with Giordano and Hamonic in the lineup. Now half their top 6 are AHL players.

Setting up the lines like

Gaudreau-Monahan-Kovalchuk
Lucic-Backlund-Mangiapane
Dube-Ryan-Reider/Janko/Rinaldo etc.
The Flames need a pure shooter, Kovy would fit the bill and has made the finals before. Would be an excellent trigger man alongside Gaudreau and Monahan.

Kovalchuk would be a terrible fit for this team, he is basically James Neal, there really isn't that much of difference between the two. Kovalchuk is one of the last players this team should target.

How so? If we’re targeting a d-man, he makes a lot of sense

He's a good shot. We need a good shot. He'd be insulated and mainly used as a sniper on the PP. Couldn't hurt.

The only way this makes any sense, we would have to go out and acquire a bunch of guys and waste our 1st + 2nd and everything else.

5 players short? Jeebuz, it's like some of the pessimists are trying to outdo each other with hyperbole.

2 top 9 forwards + maybe a depth forward (I would be assuming Bennett and maybe another depth forward gets traded in those deals)
I'm assuming another full time D-man like Martinez + another potential depth guy in case of stupidity with the injuries or if they deal a young guy like Kylington.
Both the depth guys would be like Shore or Fantenberg etc.
3 good players + 2 depth.
I don't think we have the pieces to deal for the parts we need (good players) without eating some of the players we have on the NHL team.

Yes, he has been one of Montreal's best players since going there and he wants a cup to match Ovy.

I'd pay a third for Kovalchuk. But no higher.
If we make the dance (meaning playing decently above water the rest of the way) I think theres enough incentive there that he would put up some playoff goals. Ideally as a PP specialist.
Is Martinez seen as a strong shutdown guy? Cause I'm not even familiar enough to know.

Martinez is not good. I do not know when he acquired this reputation for being good at hockey, but it's undeserved.

I'm still not buying it. I think we definitely could use (really use) a top 6 RW, but obtaining one would help adjust the rest of the forward group so they're playing in roles better suited for them.
But you originally said we're 5 good players short. You count 2 depth players in your 5, one a forward because you assume we trade another one away. So we're not short that player, we're replacing them.
I think we're short a piece or two, but not nearly as bad as you think.

No interest in Martinez. I liked him as that #5 guy back when the Kings used to have four top four guys to shelter him but he's 32 and he's not any better than the guys we have. It'd just be Fantenberg 2.0. Stick with Kylington, Davidson, Valimaki, even Stone.
Kovalchuk otoh.. #### yeah!!! He's a one man powerplay and his 5v5 numbers have been stellar since the move to MTL.

If this is true I wonder if the Flames think the outlook on either Hamonic or Gio (likely Hamonic) is not so good.

He is too slow to play on a line with Gaudreau and Monahan and he isn't good enough defensively to play with Tkachuk and Backlund. He would end up playing on the 3rd line with Ryan and Lucic, not sure that is a good fit either. It would end up very similarly to how it went with Neal.

I don't like the idea of Martinez, I think we have enough depth in D to not make that move. Save the picks or use them for forwards (prefer option 1).
