The Mel Bridgeman that the Flames got was not the Mel Bridgeman that played for the Flyers and could hide behind some of the alpha goods that team had.
He came here and he became pretty much the softer side of sears Mel Bridgeman.
Though you have to admit it was a pretty bad trade when they shipped Bridgman and Russell off for Quenneville (who was flipped for Volcan) and Tambellini.
I admit nothing flatfoot, I want to talk to my lawyer, what's with all the 2nd degree. I didn't see nothin, I don't know nothin, I was at home that night, yeah that's it, at home, watchin Carson on the ole boob tube.
Now if you ain't chargin me with nuthin I'm walkin out of here, and yeah yeah I know Don't leave town.

Two good players for garbage. Mel Bridgeman was among the Flames leading scorers in his first year.
I didnt realize The Corral used to have 'Flintstone Car' parking. If you werent affluent enough to own a car did they at least provide a hitchin' post for the Dinosaur that you rode to the game?

Dinosaurs had yet to be tamed at that time.

It was 1981. Everyone had a car. It was our birthright.

That was the first time I entered a playoff draft with some buds in my freshman year at university - I loaded up on North Stars and won the draft that year - good memories.

"The crazy thing about the Corral,'' muses Murdoch, "was that our dressing room was on the other side of the lobby so that the end of every period and beginning of the next period we'd have to walk through the crowd to reach the ice surface.
"If you'd had a bad game …
"They had cardboard down so we wouldn't wreck the edges of our skates.
"On those walks, you got to know people. So you'd be heading out for a period, recognize someone who was there every game and say 'Hey, Bill, how's it going?' on the way out to play.

"What amazed me,'' Calgary's GM of the time, Cliff Fletcher, says now, "is that we'd been able to sell standing-room season tickets. I think they were $25 bucks a game.
"A lot of money back then. To stand. But you had a number, so no one could stand in your spot.
I honestly thought that they would beat the Stars. The Flames just felt like a team of destiny at that point even though there was no way that the Flames were going to beat the Islanders.
It is a reasonable conclusion to think that the Islanders would have defeated our 1980-81 Flames in the Stanley Cup Final, but I do think we would have put up a good fight.
We played the Islanders (and each of the other 19 teams) 4 times that year, twice in Calgary and twice on the road:
December 13, 1980 - NYI 4 @ Calgary 4
December 23, 1980 - Calgary 2 @ NYI 2
January 20, 1981 - Calgary 0 @ NYI 5
February 25, 1981 - NYI 4 @ Calgary 11
I think we had team that matched up better with the Islanders than Minnesota did, who fell in 5 games in the Final. We had size and toughness, we were tough at home (only 5 losses in the regular season in the Corral that first year) and we showed we could win a big game on the road with a game 7 victory at the Philadelphia Spectrum in round 2.
