Not that exciting to get traded to a non-playoff team at the deadline.

You could be right if McDavid really limits the list of teams he’s willing to go to.m (eg. 1 or 2 teams only). In that case, the Oilers would be really limited in terms of what they could ask for and the teams might not have much of anything to give if they are contenders. But if it’s a list as long as say 5 teams and if it was this summer, I think there are only 3-4 young players/prospects in the entire league that wouldn’t be on the table (Celebrini, Bedard, Schaefer, ???). It’s getting McDavid for at least 2 years and having the best chance of any team in the league to sign him to an extension at the end of that contract.

Ahaha, legacy.
No matter what, he'll be demonized for leaving. It'll be worse if it's to toronto.

Great players have legacies that unfold naturally, they don't need to worry about manufacturing one.

I doubt his ego could handle being second fiddle to Barkov.

I can't imagine being as consistently wrong and brain-dead about literally everything as that dude. Blows my mind that this moron continues to remember to breathe and has somehow found a way to survive as a human being this long when he is so god damn stupid.

Stupid is as stupid does.
And his old agent is the Oilers president.

I think that contract was him giving the Oilers a final chance at building a team around him.
Well I don't think that worked. I think he'll ask for a trade at season's end.

I truly think they'll miss the playoffs.
The 2 long runs + Olympics must take a toll on McDavid with the amount he plays. I think the fatigue finally catches up as the games get harder and he won't be able to pull them ahead of the pack.

Could the schedule makers make it any easier on the Oilers? They don’t play until tomorrow after playing Saturday in California giving them a few extra days in the sun, and then don’t play again after that until Friday.
League doing everything in their power to try to keep the glitter twins powered up to get them to the promise land.

Yeah, not to mention that they don't even play another game in the eastern time zone this season. Haven't had to play a game against an eastern conference team in the eastern time zone since they played the Bruins in Boston on December 18th.

I think there’s a 10% chance McDavid leaves this summer. Slightly higher if the Oilers miss the playoffs or get ousted early. And the fact that Toronto is going downhill spectacularly this season opens up that possibility. Next summer almost certainly, because he’s not yet again going into a contract year without a contract extension. But again this 2 year deal was more for acquiring team flexibility rather than saving the Oilers money.
His 2 year deal at a cap friendly amount was to make his trading to a team easier. Him and the Oilers are on the same page with how this is going to play out, and have generally for a while.
The trade return isn’t going to floor anyone. Decent players have NMCs and those that have waived to go to Edmonton wasn’t for the Waterpark it was to play with McDavid, and the league is littered with players that tried that and then got out (Mangipane is next).
