Yeah. For instance, you could use that $12,000 to pay your corporate lending lawyer for half an hour's work!

And in doing so you downgrade your third line significantly by replacing Mang with a defensively poor, small winger who isn't productive offensively at the NHL level and from where I am sitting, make your team even worse. As much as Mangiapane hasn't been producing he is an NHL veteran who is defensively responsible and has a decent amount of playoff experience.
"Elite" move
The Mangi contract was terrible, but I love seeing what they've done this year.
Skinner to Jarry
Kulak to Stastny
Mangipane to Howard
Just steadily making the team worse

It seems like they are trying to embarrass Mangiaoane to get him to agree to a mutual contract termination. Wouldn’t surprise me to see some back door work here involving Oiler 50/50 funds be a factor here.
I’m predicting mutual contract termination……..

Would be pretty dumb of Mang to do that. He likely doesn’t get more than a 1 year league min deal if he was Ufa. Would be sacrificing over 2 million

Only if you believe there haven't been other back door deals done with their other "mutual contract terminations", early retirements, etc...

It’s paywalled but “lowetide” (Allan Mitchell) on the athletic has a piece this morning contemplating what happens when oilies miss playoffs.
Too many contracts that can’t/won’t be moved and the best way forward is to ditch young players.
The other alternative is to wait.
Not making that up.

I wonder if there’s a specific defenceman that he’s annoyed is blocking a trade to Edmonton. Maybe OEL? Along with the many reasons any defenceman would not want to play for Edmonton, he might have the simple reason of hating Edmonton after playing them in the cup final 2 years ago.

I think 97 waits and just leaves in Free Agency in 2 years...
Not sure if anyone will be able to give with the Oil will ask for him.

The guy is 76 years old. While he's ripe age for US presidency, his days of being a competent journalist have long passed as they keep him around because he represents the 80's and their glory days.

He's too concerned about his legacy. He will give Edmonton every opportunity to extract value from him. And on the other side, teams will move heaven and earth if they can get him. Toronto, NYR, LA all at the top of the heap.

He would definitely want to go to a contender and likely to a team that doesn’t have the issues Edmonton has. Don’t think Toronto would be on his radar anymore with how their team looks these days - plus they don’t have any assets that would be worth much in a trade. So many of the contenders in the league just don’t have the assets that you would think would be needed to acquire McDavid.
Montreal comes to mind as a team loaded with picks + prospects and they are entering their competitive window. Imagine they could offer a package of multiple 1sts + Demidov and/or Hage. Not many teams could top that kind of trade offer. Big problem is that Montreal is probably the only place in the league that would have more attention on him off the ice than Edmonton. I imagine McDavid would want to escape that a bit if he was traded.
After his experience in the Olympics, I could see San Jose being a fit. Team on the rise with the next superstar on the team already. It’s a great place to live and players that go there usually love it because the fans are passionate when the team is good but the players can live normal lives outside the rink. It would be a gamble though because San Jose would be a similar team structure at this point as Edmonton in terms of having poor defence. It would likely cost them Smith/Misa + multiple 1sts + one of their top prospects.
With his trade protection though, Edmonton could be left with a really bad return if McDavid simply picks the best team and only wants to be traded there. In that case Edmonton would have to just get whatever they can and it would likely be much less than what teams like Montreal or San Jose could offer.

I don't think the return on a McDavid trade is as big as you think
