Hartnell is getting older, but he would make Johnny and Mony two feet taller.

Don't we have 4 million for Hudler and 4 million for Jones coming off the books? Plus around 8 million in goalies? Then either Russell goes or one of the other dmen have to go.
We could potentially have a lot of salary coming off. Lots depends on how Treliving wants to solve the goaltending issue.

We also have Monahan and Gaudreau as RFA's this summer. Both are going to get long term pricey deals. Jones' 4 million will go to Gaudreau, Hudler's 4 will go to Monahan.. and then some.
Summer of 2017 almost 14 million comes off the books for Wideman, Engelland, Raymond and Smid so maybe it could work but I'd be pretty leery adding almost 5 million for 34 year old Hartnell.

Exactly. Let's draft the next hartnell instead of trading for an over the hill one.

Ya know, you could do both.
Then in three years when the older Hartnell is done and his contract expires, the new one is ready to take over.

Ok. Raymond or another cap dump for hartnell and it's a deal. No picks/prospects/young roster players and I'm in.

GOOD GOD Noooooooooooooooo!!!!
It's looking more & more like we have an excellent chance at a top 3 pick. That would just be stupid to do that trade. Besides we already have Gaudreau. We don't need another "small" player on the top line.

The Hudler/Jones money coming off the books will go to Gaudreau/Monahan. As for the goalies, if you remove that 8M, we don't have a starter or backup.

I thought that if he was sent to the minors his contract was buried and came off the cap anyway... Maybe I'm wrong but If that is true it would actually be worse to buy him out and spend most of that money anyway get a cap penalty and lose a guy who would probably be dominant in the a and could potentially create a better environment for the young guys.

Only $950k would be buried in the minors.

The Chicago Blackhawks demote Bryan Bickell to the AHL during the 2015-16 season. Bickell carries a $4.0 million AAV. The Blackhawks would still have $3.05 million counting against their Averaged Club Salary total for the period Bickell is in the minors.

It would be hard to spend as much on goalies as we did this season. I don't see us spending 8 million on goalies next year.
I don't see all of Wideman, Russell, Smid and Engelland back. Raymond could be bought out.
Treliving won't have zero flexibility. To take the next step IMO we need to draft a 1st line forward or top 2-3 d-man this year, and sign or trade for a top 2 line forward or top 4 d-man. And solve the goalie problem.

Yes that's all well and good, but that also means that two bodies have to replace hudler and jones. Let's say for fun that the new roster players make 1 mill each. That means that hudler jones really only save us 6 in cap, which will effectively amounts for gaudreau OR monahans raise. Not both.

Hopefully Russell will come off the books too. Either when/if we trade him later this year, or when he can come off the books which is at the end of this year, assuming they don't re-sign him, which I hope they don't.

We REALLY need to stop the Ferland and a 2nd for Drouin talk. It's just absolutely ridiculous to even propose that Yzerman would even look at that offer and not laugh his A$$ off. Fans of other teams ae gonna read this nonsense and think we are all dumb lol

I don't see the point in buying out Raymond and extending his cap hit another season. It's not like the Flames will be in a tough spot next season when Hiller, Jones, Hudler and Russell come off the books.

Get the contract off the books and open up the roster spot.
Save 2 million in cap space next year when gio's raise comes into effect, raises for Monahan and Gaudreau kick in and Wideman, Smid Engelland, Stajan, Backlund are all still on the roster.

You still won't need to save the cap space for next year if the Flames are sellers, and they won't need the roster spot either. The only issue is the 50 contract limit rule - but I would imagine the Flames will once again be comfortably under that anyways.
Enough guys will probably be moving on - Jones, Hiller, Hudler more than likely, and possibly Russell and whomever else management feels isn't part of the long-term picture. Heck, Raymond may have another 20 goal season next year, and be a relatively attractive target for next season's trade deadline.
If enough prospects push Raymond out, then I would just expect Raymond to get sent down to Stockton again anyways. He has been a borderline NHL'er this year, and if a prospect can't push him out, then that same prospect should be developing on the farm anyways.

I wonder if the Lightning would take Ferland and Russell for Drouin? Or if they would consider Backlund, Russell, and Andersson for Drouin, Coburn, and Spencer? I think I'm ready to roll the dice on Drouin, especially if we have a shot at Laine or Puljujarvi. Would be very interesting to have the Drouin dynamic passing to one of those two.

So in the previous couple seasons we have seen a fairly substantial trade 2/3 weeks before the deadline. Hopefully this "trend" continues and we get some action soon!
