If the Flames aren’t going to compete anyway over the next couple of seasons (pretty much a given at this point), I wouldn’t be opposed to a couple of nostalgic signings like Gio or Monahan. The Flames still need to ice a roster and I’d rather a couple of old favourites on short term deals than any long-term UFA.
Gives me something else fun to watch while this team loses a lot of games next year

Feels like a buy high situation. If he stays healthy it could work out but not a fan of this unless it's a great contract.

Monahan would be a 2 or 3C here? Zero chance he can handle 1C duties again.

FWIW, I think his wife is from here.
Probably viewed as a 3/4C type of move; get someone who can show up there and distribute on one of the PP lines, maybe.

That cmpdave guy also said that he believes the Flames will have a discussion with Monahan.
I would be surprised if it happened (I think in Monahan's exit presser this season he said he wanted to play for a contender) but I would love it - I just bought his jersey haha

3/4C behind Kadri and Backlund IMO. And it would strangely make me feel slightly better about giving MTL a first after next season.
Imagine MTL is better next year and near the playoffs and somehow Monahan (on the Flames) puts a dagger in MTL’s playoff hopes late in the season. I’d be so happy

I'd think Monahan would want to find a spot on a team likely to be a lock to make the playoffs for a few years in a row, but maybe he'll get more money here still get moved at a trade deadline [for a 1st ]

Two wingers that have great shots and motor both not above 6' tall. They may play opposite sides but they are essentially very similar players. It's certainly a nice to have but the organization has more pressing needs in a couple of top pairing defenders and a future first line center

With his injury history I'm sure Monahan is looking to sign for the longest most lucrative contract possible

Doesn't Gio just want to play in Toronto? Don't see the fit anyway.

Why would flames do that? They have a huge surplus of bottom pairing d men. Sorry gio is not top 4 anymore.

That's all good but what will he want for a contract after a 59 point season? If he got Backlund money, good. Will he want more?

Indeed. With how many D we have it would be a mistake to fill a spot with Gio. It's already looking like there won't be an empty spot for any of the prospects to revolve through for some looks.

I don't see the point. He's replacement level now and would just be taking a spot that could go to a young, developing defenseman. I don't trust NHL coaches to make the best decisions when they have a veteran guy like this that they put in the lineup because of experience. Huska will be trying to win as many games as he can this season as coaches do but that's at odds with the mission of finishing bottom 10 so Montreal doesn't get the Flames first pick.

I’m not opposed to bringing in any free agent. The Flames are going to be terrible regardless and having players available, you could flip additional personnel at the deadline. Realistically you are likely to see Kuzmenko, Mangiapane, Sharangovich etc move at the deadline, and you will need some players left over to play.

Iginla is 6'0" according to hockeydb. And in any event I doubt he plays small. He already weighs 186 at age 17 and I bet he tops 200 with training and a couple years growth. The scouts say he has a similar build to his dad at the time.

Please no. This team shouldn't be overpaying for players that are in this UFA range anymore or an obvious band-aid. Period. Monahan does nothing for the team except potentially take away cap room that could be weaponized and possibly drag the team further into no mans land.
Yes, you need to ice a team of some ilk or risk creating an oiler toilet bowl for the next 10 years, but you can do that by bringing in the odd cagey veteran who's looking for a short term deal and surround them with talented younger players like Pelletier, Coronato, Zary, Pospisil etc.
