I'm still against trading Hanifin barring some sort of overpayment. He's a key player.
Especially if it's for a small forward like Garland.
The roster has been shaken up enough. I don't see the need to ship major players out. The addition of Weegar is enough of an adjustment.
Top 4 defensemen are generally more valuable than most 2nd line wingers. They play more minutes.

Aside from being a terrible trade you are also helping one of your biggest rivals

If they trade Hanifin for a winger, 2 months into the season, there gonna be threat popping up asking where can we trade for a top young D that can score points and be on the plus side of plus/minus. May be we can trade a 1st and a prospect. You know, like this one:
25 years old dman, coming off 48 points and +27

Podkolzin or lekkermakki or hang up. You make em wince for wanting Hanifin. Test their mettle.

I'd rather have Garland than Podkolzin or Lekkerimäki. But ideally you might be able to get both.

If we're trading Hanafin we better be getting a Smith back. I'd even take a Jones for Hannafan.

I’d rather give Dube and Pelletier a chance than add Garland. We can get a Garland at the deadline if needed for less than Hanifin

Great regular season for him and razz. Poor playoffs.
No matter which way you slice it, they need to be better. Otherwise we'll go nowhere (with them as our top pairing).

Bleacher report had 5 trades they proposed, I would definitely be for the Flames deal. Rangers get Hanifin and Flames get Kakko and Lundkvist. Love Hanifin but I would do that.

I think that's an ideal trade scenario for us. Losing hanifin does hamper us, he's an excellent, steady presence. But cost controlled rw with an absolute rocket shot is pretty alluring. Nilsundqvist is also pretty good.
I'd be more interested in understanding if there was any possible add to bridge the value between hanifin and lafreniere.

Yeah I don’t hate that trade, might need a little bit extra in that from NYR. The good thing about Kakko is he is cost controlled for a few years. Lafreniere is up for a raise after this season and could get a break out year if he got time with Huberdeau or just simply was better (not a bad problem to have)

Unless the Flames use the new-found cap space on another big piece, nah.
Puts the Flames in a position to bank too much on Kakko & Lundkvist making big improvements. Plus, going from Hanifin to Lundkvist basically reverses going from Gudbranson to Weegar, and I'm still traumatized from the postseason when losing Tanev secured the Flames' disastrous fate, so I'm fully on team "keep the NHL's best 1-6 D-core together".
If they were retooling/rebuilding, I'd say go for it, but the Flames are literally in "go for it" mode right now, so makes zero sense to make a trade that arguably makes them worse this season.

I would say that it was a move from hanafin to weegar, and gudbranson to Mackey in that scenario. Weegar is a slight upgrade on hanafin, and I dare say Mackey is a slight upgrade on gudbranson.
It's like getting a free kakko!

Mackey is in no way an upgrade on Gudbranson. Not even close.

Mackey likely won't be an upgrade on Calgary Gudbranson. He could very well be an upgrade on Columbus Gudbranson.
