West Virginia is coal country, Trump is going to bring back high paying coal jobs
It seems they in that town hall however were well aware that is not going to happen, the kick in the teeth to them is of course the ACA and Trumps promises to make it better.
I have spent some time in West Virginia. To get them to cheer for liberal ideas was either staged or a miracle.
I believe Trump was going to approve a mine in WV back country, and they were all for it. Perhaps the Dems should have said the same thing at the time. "More jobs" is basically what they want to hear there.
My brother who has been in Canada since he was 3 years old and only holds Canadian citizenship was just held up by CBP officers for 3 hours causing him to miss his flight. He's travelled to the United States dozens of times his entire life, but this is the first time since the Trump election. He's also probably the least Muslim person out there (he's probably more of an atheist actually) but, he was born in the Middle East and has an Arab sounding name, so he's gotta be extreme vetted! Thanks Trump you ####ing Moron! Way to keep your country safe!

I know more than a few people who weren't very Republican, but who voted for Trump because they were of the opinion that Obamacare was too expensive and that Trump would provide them with better options. I find it mind boggling, but, it probably was enough people to swing the election.
Hillary said coal miners would be retrained, she should have lied and said, she would bring coal mining jobs back, for the first time in 40 years.
Coal Miners don't want to be re-trained, they want to have a stable, predictable paycheque that they can support their families with. It's a huge risk to implement a "re-train" strategy when there is no clear, long-term path for what exactly they want to achieve. Not sure Clinton/Dems would even know what to re-train them for. And for that matter, not sure the Republicans would know either. Every state has different contexts.

Keep believing that a miracle coal revival is on the way. No different than people who worked in manufacturing keep believing robots will somehow stop existing, or that ending free trade will produce high paying jobs again.

There is something that I think/hope will save a lot of damage being done by the GOP who are hell bent on destroying everything. Companies now see themselves as having to be a part of the community in more than just a "we hire people" way. They look to be responsible members of the community and a good chunk of that is making sure you don't pollute and you don't cause problems. Not every company, but many of them aren't going to simply drop their own standards because the EPA gets destroyed and regulations are loosened. It's not good for the long term relationships in the area.
As such, already several utility companies have said that they have no plans to change course. Coal will be phased out and Clean energy expanded. There is no doubt. They recognize that even if regulations are tightened that they will come back at some point and that climate change is very real. Some smaller utilities will probably make a quick cash grab and build some cheap coal plants if they are allowed but a cash grab is what it will be. They sure won't decrease electricity costs and pass savings on to the customer and those customers I know won't be happy to have a few more coal plants in their back yards.
This may have been posted earlier. If so, apologies. But, if it was and you didn't read it, I recommend. (FYI, this article is not related at all to the latest specific discussion around coal).
This is the conundrum. What ozzy said is true. Large scale education and retraining programs make a difference in the long term, but short term they do not. A 25 year veteran of coal mining is unlikely to be found successfully working in another job. There's ample examples around North America. We haven't found what the solution is.
These people want to be told they'll get back the job they lost because of the "bad guy" whether it be East Coast fisheries, EPA, Obama, etc. Someone is the reason they lost their honest hard working job they're entitled to and they want it back

Intelligence committee chairs just said so far no evidence of Trump's wiretapping claims, and that if they don't get any soon they might subpoena for some. I'm guessing Trump would like that one back.

Yup. "Congress is going to flex its muscles". Comey has today to respond to question regarding whether there were warrants issued or applied for, for wiretapping.
Apparently Republicare/Trumpcare has become pretty toxic and people are throwing each other under the bus. Paul Ryan is blaming Trump for co-writing it after Trump deflected criticism after CBO reports up to 24 million people would be left uninsured by the changes.
Quote:
You wrote it, you own it.
House Speaker Paul Ryan said Wednesday that President Donald Trump and a Senate committee helped write the House's embattled replacement plan for Obamacare.
And the Wisconsin Republican insisted that "major components" of that bill will stay in place.
Ryan's comments on Fox Business News came as conservatives and other critics of the bill, which would repeal and replace key parts of the Affordable Care Act, clamored for changes.
Some conservative allies of Trump have called for the president to drop his support for the proposal because of the political perils of shrinking federal financial aid to help people get health coverage.
"Obviously, the major components are staying intact, because this is something we wrote with President Trump, this is something we wrote with the Senate committee," Ryan said.
"This is the plan we ran on all of last year."
The Congressional Budget Office estimated Monday that the bill, if it becomes law, will result in 24 million more people becoming uninsured by 2026 than would be the case under Obamacare. The CBO also noted that lower-income and older people who buy individual health plans would tend to face sharply higher health-care costs.
