Colborne for example uses his body much more along the boards. Eric Lindros, Jarome Iginla, Milan Lucic, Rick Tocchet, Keith Tkachuk, are/were power forwards. Ferland is not a power forward.

For the latter half of his career Iginla didn't even play much of a power game. Iginla was more of a "sniper" if you want to categorize him as a player. Ferland plays more of a power game than Iginla did for his last 5 years here, that's a fact as far I'm concerned.
Ferland isn't that tall but he's quite strong. You don't need to be a giant to be a power forward, Tocchet and Tkachuk aren't any bigger than Ferland.

Colborne lacks desire! There have been a few times I've seen him determined and you think, damn he could be a real gem but that's one shift every five games..
He hits like a feather. It's almost like he's just going through the motions on every hit.
I have seen nothing lately that suggests Colborne is good along the boards or good at protecting the puck except for one shift last game..
Just so much potential but constantly feeling like he isn't willing to give anymore.
If you can get a 3rd back for him, take it and run.

I kind of feel responsible...I asked if you'd trade Ferland + 2nd rounder for Drouin and it just went from there.
At least Locke isn't being a liar in this thread...
Do you think we have what it would take to trade for Hamonic?

Sometimes I check this thread out to see actual newsworthy info, but almost inevitably it gets bogged down in discussions of who's better than who, and how player X is awful, but player Y is marginally better based on infinitesimal differences that nobody can actually ascertain, but yet Poster A asserts with unwavering confidence, and then Poster B has to attack their assertion until there's an all out war between two sides.
It would be fun if it wasn't so tragic.

Chris Nichols @NicholsOnHockey
Friedman on Russell: "I'm not sure yet. I still think that their hope is to see if they can get him to take a deal." #Flames

le sigh. both should be going.

I kinda wish we could have a "Trade rumors" thread where only " insiders " tweets and comments are posted as to avoid a long dithering mega thread with 98% filler.

Should be obvious, he (and others) have been saying that for over a month now. I'm very sure he gets re-signed.

I'd be all for trading both Hudler and Russell and I still think Wideman can be dealt too!

I would also trade Jones away for any sort of pick.

Russell to me is a replacement level defenceman. Players like him go on waivers multiple times a year.
A contract for a player like him should be 1 year at a time.
The number of times Russell has gone down to block a shot, putting himself out of position, and seeing the opposition forward dance around him like a pylon, should be enough for the Flames to realize they need to stay far away.

Not even close to Hamonic value. Add Gillies or Hickey

It's really head-scratching reading some people speaking in absolutes like this season's play is how a 23 year old rookie (who plays a difficult role) has topped out.
|
No more head-scratching than the people in this thread ready to dismiss a 20-year-old drafted 3rd overall as someone who's value has plummeted so far he's no longer worth a 1st round pick, and will never reach his potential.

Exactly. You have a 20 player that was in the discussion for first overall in one of the more talented overall drafts in recent history and fans saying that they wouldn't trade back a 23 year old forward with two goals for him. I don't hate Ferland or anything but this thread needs a bit of perspective at times.

I hope that the longer Russell goes without a contract - the closer we get to moving him.
He is going to want fair market value, and IMO the Flames shouldn't be paying that.
Trade him, let him test the market, and maybe he still comes back in the offseason if the market isn't quite as rich as he expects - think Cody Franson.

That doesn't mean it's any easier to take as a Flames fan. Russell is a serviceable defenseman but only at his current contract. The problems of giving him a raise and keeping him long term are twofold; One is that he's going to take up too much cap room for what he brings to the table and two in that Hartley really, really loves the guy and overplays him to the point where he becomes more of a detriment than an asset. If Hartley gets say fired next season there's a good chance the next coach may have a different defensive philosophy and Russell will become a very expensive 5/6 defenseman signed long term.
I get that Treliving likes the current defensive group sans Wideman but you can't keep every UFA on your roster that you like because the reality is that you should only keep the ones you can't afford to lose not the "nice to have" players because having too many "nice to have" players tied up long term often results in losing a "can't afford to lose" guy in the long run.
