This is looking more and more like a Kiril Kabanov 2.0.
I also am not sure what to think when he says the color of his skin is a factor. Part of me wants to say that can't possibly true in this day and age and he is just using it as a convenient excuse. The other part of me recognizes, that I haven't actually walked in his shoes, so what do I know.

I think, considering we have 2 2nd round picks, it would be a good gamble to take.
The guy can light up games and has special talent. I don't like the attitude questions, but to get 1st-round (top 10) talent like that in the 2nd round would be hard to pass on.

Does anyone know if the Flames are one of the teams that interviewed Ho-Sang?

It should be noted that Burke said the Flames do have a "Do not draft under any circumstances" list for head cases in a previous talk about draft philosophy.
Would not surprise me if Ho-Sang was on it.

With who we have in charge, we should be the last team going after Ho-Sang. Niether burke or Hartley are easy on youngsters with issues, and I don't think Ho-Sang would handle the critisism well. Also with how many large, raw defensemen available and our obvious need for some, there are better options available at 34.

Exactly, if he's available at 34 I'd take him.
He's considered one of the most talented players in the draft, was great in the prospects game, and could be a dynamic player. Also lead the prospects with 13 chin-ups at the combine. If we draft Bennett at #4, Ho-Sang can teach Sam how to do them!

- Support: An NHL player that doesn't meet the above criteria
- Bust: A player that didn't have a meaningful NHL career.
This is what I found:
Notes: - Only 10% of players ended up as elite players (Backstrom in 2006)

I believe Pietrangelo should be in that elite category (2008).
I also think the results are skewed, as drafting was still relatively poor IMO in the late90s/early00s due to both limited technology, as well as the NHL's poor financial standing.
If you look at the 4th overall picks from 2006 to 2010, you've got:
Elite: Backstrom, Pietrangelo
Top: Johansen, Kane
Regular: Hickey
Bust: None
I could see Johansen cracking into that "elite" category over the next few years as well (2010 pick).

All that matters is this year too. We should be comparing the top four players of 2014 to the players who have been drafted in the past and seeing where their numbers/potential place them.
I think all four players slot somewhere between elite/top four at this time imo.

Ho Sang sounds like a self entitled little b*tch. I'm not concerned in the slightest that we grab him, because character rates very high from the sound of things. Seems like some punk who thinks the league revolves around him. Don't need that crap in the room.

He also spoke of how intently the Flames approach each draft with their higher picks, looking for more that just a skilled player.
“We place great value and great pride on researching a player’s character work ethic, accountability, empathy and coachabilty” said Burke.
“We have a list of adjectives on the list and I think there are about 20 and I think ‘work ethic’ appears four times out of that 20. We try to research the kids, at least in the top-three rounds where we have the assets to do it, we make mistakes like everybody, but we try our best. We don’t draft based on skill, that’s the second thing to us. We think you have a better chance of succeeding if you bring in character people than if you don’t.
“So that’s a priority for us. We do have a DND list, Do Not Draft. Some teams will evaluate a guy and say ‘He has NHL skills, but he’s a head case, so put him in the second round.’ To me, he’s still a head case in the second round, so we just take him off the list.”
|
Ho-Sang seems to fit that description from Burke

Well I have never heard of a hockey player being compared to a Harlem Globetrotter before. Seems like an odd comparison to say the least.
His complaint about who he plays with is interesting. Another small player Point played on a team where he led the second leading scorer by 36 points and was in on something like 45% of his teams goals. That is the very definition of being a one man band. As a comparable for Ho-Sang he had 3 players on his team that were closer than that and almost half a season with Kerby Rychel who was more than a point a game guy and Nick Ebert who was almost a PPG dman and Ho Sang was only in on about 34% of his teams goals.
Either way I would avoid Ho-Sang, there are more talented players who play a more complete game with character and drive to suceed who also put up 1.3 PPG last year in the CHL that will be available at 34th pick.

@Ho-Sang
Nothing wrong with a player who isn't afraid to take charge when the game is on the line.
We've had too many selfless players in recent years and not enough finish (when it mattered). As long as this kid isn't a cancer in the room then IMO it's good to have a guy with that swagger. Kind of like Subban. Looks at the way he altered the games esp late in periods and took the team on his back. Hard not to like that, as "hoggish" as it might appear.

Craig Button has his mock draft show right now
Florida - Ekblad
Buffalo - Bennett
Edmonton - Draisaitl
Calgary - Reinhart
Islanders - Dal Colle
Compared Ekblad to Seabrook.
Called the Islanders giving up the 2015 pick a huge mistake.

The worst part of this is going to be from about 4PM on Friday until the Oilers actually use their pick. Unless it's just Draisaitl left, then it's going to be sheer terror right up to the moment Treliving announces the pick.

If Reinhart is available at 4, what would you want from Vancouver to switch picks?
