The last guy I heard was an NFLer, Tyreek Hill. He said he'd be a NYJ and not a Dolphin but for taxes.

Brett Hull said (about Canadian teams): From the team’s perspective, because of the location of the free agents, they are unlikely to be able to convince them to play for their team. There are many great teams and states in the United States that do not have state taxes. It is great to belong to a Canadian team, but it’s hard for them. That’s part of the problem and probably why there’s such a long drought.

The numbers by the CTF (spit) say that 57% of UFAs sign with no/low tax states. It's an advantage.

And this agent said is was a factor in Stamkos not going to TO:

EDIT:

Bissonette talks about state taxes no end. And Burke mentioned it on TV.

True, but their growth is the result of a combination of lower cost of living, a lot of jobs, sunshine and mild winters for the retirees, and its driven by state to state and significant international in-migration. TX and FL in particular. Many factors are involved, not just taxes. And you couldn't pay me to raise a middle class family in any of those states--entirely a personal preference. I like living in New York state despite the cost. It's about as Canada-like as anywhere south of the 49th IMO. I can have a Blue, a Timmys, sing the Canadian anthem at a hockey game, touch Canadian Shield, and enjoy four seasons.

The volume seems to be turned up on this tax situation with players, so what's going on? The players and agents cant think taxation is a new thing? What about the money a pro athlete will pay extra in health costs? This all reeks of non-nuanced group making decisions.

Read the comments. There's a lot of smarter people saying he's being too simplistic and that it's not effective.

Assuming Kylington is back, and Osterle remains as the 7th D-man on the roster, the Flames have $500k left with only 12 forwards on the roster.

Anyone heard any smoke on what the plan is?

Flames going to run a 21 man roster?
Vladar is getting traded before the season opener?
One of the pending UFAs going before opening night?

What is the most likely outcome here?

Vladar will be traded because Wolf deserves to be in the NHL.

This has been a pretty slow offseason in general. Management and coaching aside. This is boring AF.

If you change the CapFriendly choices a bit by adding Rooney as the 13th forward, removing Kylington from IR and sending Gilbert to the AHL, you get $84,100,833. Could the Flames make $600,833 appear if they sent Pelletier and Coronato down on all the teams’ off days? If so, you’d have 13F, 7D and 2G without having to make any deals if no one is offering fair value.

(I’m not endorsing this plan, just asking if anyone knows if it’s possible.)

I still hope the Flames have some kind of internal deadline on Lindholm, which is will before the pre-season, and which they’re hiding.

I doubt they have a hard deadline as that could simply force a bad deal.

Not many teams have the cap space who would want to trade for Lindholm.

The trade deadline might represent the best chance of a return.

The team hasn’t been having trade discussions. It has been trying to re-sign Lindholm. You need a deadline to start actively trying to trade Lindholm. (I don’t mean a deadline to trade Lindholm. That would be silly. They must get fair value.)

I simply don’t trust the team to trade Lindholm if the team is in a playoff position or close to a playoff position.

If you want a futures deal that time has past with the cap situation as it is. Flames want a hockey trade. Best time to do that was around the draft/free agency. Second best time to do it is between now and the start of the season. The trade deadline would be the second best time to do a futures deal. Hockey trade at deadline is highly unlikely. If we keep lindholm and are in a playoff position he isn’t being dealt. Conroy has already traded tofolli so he can honestly say that he delivered on not walking 7 guys to free agency (only 6 now). So he can say that he accomplished what he set out to do by getting something for a ufa that was going to walk. We may not like it but he delivered. Kind of. And still the chance that lindholm stays. Maybe.

Hard to be excited if that is the case but it is what it is. Hopeful that one of the big two gets moved and we get a good young player that will re-energize the fan base.

I don’t believe Lindholm wants to re-sign in Calgary. It’s just been too long with a reportedly $8.5M - $9M * 8 years contract offer on the table. At a certain point, no answer is your answer. I think he must be traded.

All quiet on lindholm front as per Friedman on Twitter

https://twitter.com/NHL_Watcher/stat...7Ctwgr%5Etweet

Also says Karlsson could go down this weekend as Pittsburg buyout window closes. Maybe that will spur hanifin talks

Thanks.

I just hope they have a time well before the middle to end of September when they switch from waiting on Lindholm to trying to trade him. Maybe it’s in a week or two?

Or maybe Conroy has actually meant it when he’s said several times that he’s happy to go into the season with Hanifin and Lindholm not re-signed. If so, I hope he’s able to stick to his other words about not letting them leave for free by trading them at the deadline.
