Ryan is an excellent bottom-six forward. To have made it to 500 NHL games after playing in Austria in his late 20s is as close to a miracle as you get in hockey. Would take him back in Calgary in an instant. Good for him.

He was alright for them last year but he's a 36 year old 4th liner and this takes him to 38 years old. Not the greatest use of their limited cap space.

Sure, but how would you feel if Calgary re-signed Lewis for 2x900k? It is pretty much the same thing.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

They are going to have to release Klostin or Macleod (or both).
As clearly evidenced by Vegas last year, who had to get cute with the cap because of the Eichel acquisition, and then they missed the playoffs...
Where is the evidence of a player volunteering to sit out the season in order to help his team remain cap compliant? Mark Stone has actual, debilitating chronic back issues which took him out of the lineup last year.

There is literally no risk to the deal and Ryan is worth it for sure. Underappreciated when he was in Calgary too.
If he regresses then you can waive him and he doesn't count towards the cap with that salary. 10 goals, 20 points in each of the last two seasons for the Oilers in a 4th line role.

Ryan is a good guy and a fine player. I think he's productive for at least a season, and thats a contract you bury in the minors either way.
That being said, this is nice and indicative of the tire spinning we are about to see in oil country, and I love that angle. It also requires no disrespect to Ryan.
