That makes sense to me for both sides. Hope the pick can be lottery or at least top 3 protected but that is a deal the Flames should be willing to make. Columbus gets a replacement center singed for 3 years and a future piece

Monahan + a 1st is an instant yes. Obviously put in a lottery protection clause where if we finish bottom 10 we can defer a year.

If it only takes mony and a 1st I would not nix the deal over protection. Protection only makes it jump one year. If we finish in the bottom 3 then flames would have a hell of a lot of work to do the following year to get out of bottom 5. I got faith that a move like Mony for Dubios will not make the team decline in any way.

I think the only way the Flames organization will split up Gaudreau and Monahan is if they trade one of them. I'm so tired of them as a pair. Swapping Monahan + for Dubois would be such a dramatic and welcome facelift to this core

I would be OK with the Monahan +1st for PLD deal, but am I the only one in a cold sweat thinking of what could happen if Monahan responded to Tortorella and found a gritty two-way game? It would be hard to take.

Not gonna happen, but I would love to trade gaudreau and monahan for PLD and a first or a prospect. That would be better for the expansion draft and for the whole future setup agewise. But anyway, just a dream.
Edit: Obviously a somewhat bad contract has to come back too.

Nope, this would be a one for one deal. No first pick, if the Flames do badly this year they will need the first. I don’t think Tre wants to repeat the Hamonic deal again.

Probably will do better than under Ward. He did well with Hartley and Peters. I think he needs a coach to kick him in the azz.

Flames could finish just outside the playoffs and win the lottery. Rangers were not a bottom 3 team yet they got the first pick. Flames finished one point ahead of the Hurricanes in 2018 and had they not won that last game against Vegas they would have gifted the Islanders Svechnikov instead of Dobson.
All it takes in a 56 game season is a couple of injuries and teams can fall right out of the race.
Having said that if Jarmo says Monahan+unprotected 1st next year is a done deal then Treliving should pull the trigger

I'd do Monahan + 1st rounder for PLD in a hearbeat (but the 1st rounder HAS to be lottery protected). I don't want to go through what Sens and Sharks fans went through the last couple years.
I'd think CBJ would prefer Monahan and Pelletier or Zary. That would make me think about it but I'd still probably do it

Last year's lottery is irrelevant...it was a unique scenario that won't happen again.

No in fact it is quite relevant.
Do you know who actually won the lottery to get that pick in play for the 8 losers who did not qualify for the playoffs?
It was the 9th seed Winnipeg Jets.
Look at the past several lotteries and while it is still a low chance but in 2017 Philly and Dallas jumped way up to get in the top 3. Carolina did in in 2018, Chicago and NY in 2019 and then the Jets/Rangers in 2020.

If you think the trade helps your team, you do it. If the other team hits on their less than 1% chance of a) it being a lottery pick, and then b) winning said lottery, well, good for them.

If Jarmo is on the line and says to Treliving “Dubois is yours if you give me Monahan and a 1st but I need that first unprotected” then I support Treliving making the deal.
Ideally you really try to protect the pick like many teams have been able to do in other deals but it wouldn’t be a deal breaker for me in a Dubois trade

I guess Roger Millions is writing articles about the Flames and Oilers now. Here are his thoughts on either team making the move. He doesn’t fail to take a light swipe at the government as well

thing about a trade is both teams have to want to do it.
Can you explain why in the world Columbus would consider for one second a 1 for 1 deal - Monahan for Dubois?
Jarmo Kekalainen is an excellent GM. he's not going to pull a chiarelli.

But what if Kekalainen is playing the "It's a process" drinking game when he's talking to Tre? How do you think that Tre has signed RFA's for so much cheaper than the braintrust of CP figured he'd get them signed for?
