I think signing another big free agent like Rodrigues is unlikely. After signing Ruzicka we will be a million or so under the salary cap. It cost us a first to trade Monahan, we aren't going to find a team to take Lucic as a cap dump that has both the cap space and aren't on his NTC. We don't have any other options to generate a bunch of cap.

I:m all for a top 6 RW, preferably a top line RW, but those pieces aren't enticing enough. We'll see a top 4 D-man shipped out before training camp, imo.
And the return will be a really great top line add, and then I'll start to think we could take on Colorado/other contenders in a playoff run. I can't wait.

Hanifin has to go. Sell high now and get a solid winger.

Lucic is the 13th forward.
I hesitated on putting Pelletier on the 4th instead of Dube but ended up picking Pelletier.
Pairs 2 and 3 aren't exactly your standard pairs 2 and 3 with Daryl. They likely end up having the same amount of ice time than pair 2. Sutter rolls the defence so I think that 2 and 3 are basically two second pairings.

Rodrigues and Kadri have the same agent. Might just be supporting a fellow client.
I get the impression that he might be asking for more money than what GMs are willing to give him.

You don't have to sell now, but I agree that Hanifin is not long for Calgary and cashing in might not be the worst thing.
Let's learn from the past by being more proactive. The D is a position of strength. If a depth guy pushes in camp like Oliver last year then all the more reason to get ahead of the curve with Noah and net a nice return, maybe even a good young forward that can help us long term.
This is how teams stay relevant. Quietly load up while you're in your window, then you won't have to crash and burn later

Oh yeah, I doubt it means anything, it was just interesting.
I would love if he signed with the Flames, he would be a great fit IMO.

Imagine him with Coleman and Backlund. They’d shut down the opposition.

Why is he not long for Calgary?
Learn from the past?
So he’s an automatic flight risk because he’s American. That’s what you’re getting at right?
The D is a position of strength I agree, let’s keep it that way. I can’t believe Treliving improved the D and so many people want to start trading away key pieces.
Did any of you guys see what happened to the D after Tanev went down in the playoffs? Depth is important! Not just any depth, but good depth.
Which prospect is coming out of nowhere to provide what Hanifin does? 26 year old Mackey? He’s actually older than Hanifin is.
Valimaki was playing third pairing in the AHL last season.
And which teams are staying relevant by trading away top pairing, 25 year old defenseman? The Islanders when they traded Toews to the eventual cup champs?
We have a 25 year old top pair defenseman just coming into his own signed for cheap for two more seasons and some people want him traded. It’s crazy to me.

Some people actually think trading Hanifin is addition by subtraction.

Its more about bringing balance to the team.
Your defense is a 10/10 but your forward group is still a 7/10, if that. Toffoli and Coleman/Dube as your top 6 RWers is fine but not ideal.
When you're looking at dealing with St Louis, Edmonton, Vegas, Colorado who have high octane offense, you want to be able to put up enough goals of your own. Which means having as many bona-fide top 6 guys as those teams can put out. Playing prevent hockey might not be enough, as we witnessed.
Weegar has a slight edge on Hanifin, so you still make an improvement on the back end, but trading D for F to give you a 9/10 defense and 8/10 offense I think helps you chances against the aforementioned teams.

well to be fair they didn't, they thought they could run and gun the Oilers after game one...especially two certain players

It's not though, it's robbing Peter to pay Paul.
Here is the current lineup:
Hanifin - Andersson
Kylington - Tanev
Zadorov - Weegar
Valimaki - Meloche
Mackey
You have 3 solid pairs which, as you say, is a 10 - even with an injury or 2 (IMPOSSIBLE to avoid in the playoffs), it is still solid
but take Hanifin out, and you have this:
Weegar - Anderson
Kylington - Tanev
Zadorov - Meloche
Valimaki
Mackey
now you have 2 solid pairs with a weak 3rd pair. Get an injury or 2 in the playoffs, and you have the exact same situation as we had against the Oilers.
Without Hanifin, the D is about a 7 or 8. But one key injury in the top 4, and it's a major probllem.
We need to add another forward, no question. But weakening our D to do it is the wrong way to go. Trade Valimaki, or even Kylington if you have to, but we should keep the top 4 of Hanifin, Andersson, Weegar and Tanev, because they a WHY we have an awesome D.
